Find answers to your legal question.

Do Marines get scared or freaked out before they leave for basic training?

This is specifically a question for retired Marines, or men that ARE marines:

Did you get freaked out before you left for basic training? Like, if you went in right out of high school.

If so, did you cut yourself off from everybody? Conceal yourself in a little ball to make sure you wouldn't get hurt, even if you hurt those dear to you?
Additional Details
This is not me, this is my ex that recently dumped me.

I actually had another recruit run away from the airport prior to boot camp!! Personally I didn't fear boot camp at all. I always wanted to serve my country and to try and be the best at everything I did. I heard how challenging it is and most of my friends told me I would never make it. That motivated me even more to graduate and earn the title US Marine. Semper Fi.

My girlfriend joined. Army though, not Marines. She's in boot camp right now and graduates next week. She was opposite of your ex. The only thing her and I both freaked out about was being apart for such a long time so we spent a ton of time together before she left. We just tried to have a good time and we actually got closer. I was worried she might withdraw and "conceal herself in a little ball" after she got there, but she hasn't. We write each other a ton of letters, and she has even called on a few occasions.

Now, Im 26, she's 21, she has a four year old son, and we've all had been living together for a while. So our situation is different than two people who just got out of high school. Not to mention she's a woman and your ex is a man. maybe that stuff makes a difference... maybe not.

The only thing I can think comparable is in high school track i would withdraw and sit on the buss by myself before running the1600m relay. My nerves would go haywire and i got really really anxious. I would shut down and i wanted to be alone. Maybe that's kind of what he was feeling? After all, joining the Marines is a lot bigger than a 1600m relay race.

1. You are NOT a Marine until you pass Marine Corps boot camp.
2. I didn't freak out or get scared, I looked forward to going :)

I joined the Corps right out of high school and what you're feeling is totally normal. I somewhat cut myself off too, but when i was in Boot, i regretted it big time. I would sit on my footlocker and miss things like family, food and partying. Its totally and one hundred percent worth it. But you realize when youre in that the people who are worth a salt to you, are the ones who write you letters and support you. I was totally freaked out and almost backed out, but i said "All these former Marines are soo proud, and i wont understand until i do it". It turned out to be the best decision i ever made and it was totally worth it. Bootcamp for the Marines is no joke, I sat in my house every night watching Youtube videos and working out, thinking cutting myself off would make the blow less harsh when I got down, but all it did was hurt more because you feel even more alone. Live a little before boot and go do the damn thing so you can concentrate on the task at hand when you are down there. Trust me, you wont regret it.

I don't qualify as a US Marine right now, but I am only 15...

I'm joining the Corps in 2011 after I graduate High School, and contrary to popular belief, you DO need a High School Diploma to enter the USMC, unless they are really desperate and are handing out waivers for everything, which from what I hear, is not the case right now.

I am pretty nervous and I know that the best way to prepare is physical workouts, and just keep in mind that Boot is just a test to see if you got enough balls to be a Marine. But yeah, I'm nervous, I don't plan on isolating myself though, I plan on taking advantage of the privileges in Boot such as writing letters to counter the loneliness or whatever I might feel.

I want to be a 0311 Rifleman, Semper Fi
