Do all recruiters do this?
|
Hello everyone,
A couple days ago I requested information on Marines.com. I am very interested in joining and have requested info from that site and many other branches sites before. I usually get some kind of e-mail or letter in the mail. But today a Marine showed up at my door to talk to me. I only spoke to him for about 10 minutes.
I just thought it was weird that they would send someone out the very next day. Do they always do this? I cant imagine they would send someone out to everybody that requests info.
Anybody know?
Thanks Additional Details Yeah, I've heard about the lying. Its a good thing I dont buy what people say already or I'd be in trouble.

When you go to a military website like that and enter your personal information, a lot of things start happening. Based on your zip code or High School, a certain recruiter is assigned to your area. That information you put in is transmitted almost instantly to the recruiter assigned to your area via thier blackberry or e-mail, etc. Recruiters handle that information in different ways. Some call, some e-mail, and some immediately visit. A recruiter who covers a few square miles may only get one or two (or zero) internet contacts a week, so if they aren't doing much, it's no big deal for them to stop by. When an person gives thier name and contact information, they are referred to as "a lead". When a lead expresses information online, a lot of recruiters refer to that as a "hot lead" because you are looking into the military right this second. Logically, they want to talk to you while the military is on your mind so that they can attempt to sell you on their branch and get a commitment from you. It's like if you're in the mood to buy something, a good salesman will have the product you want to buy for you while you're still in the mood. Sometimes that technique comes on a little strong to some people. He's harmless, he just wants to talk to people who are interested instead of just random dirtbags.
Make sure you shop around and get what you want from whatever branch you choose. Good luck! |

He may have already been in the area. No, not all recruiters do this but it's not out of line either. You have to remember everyone in the military is trained to for the target in the mission. For a recruiter, that target is a certain quota of recruits every month. |

Take it from someone who lived with one her entire life. It is somewhat common. If you requested information before, or several times, they are more inclined to believe you are truly interested in a career in the service. If it seems you are unsure of the branch or career path, someone will come out to speak to you and yes, try to convince you they are the best branch for you. I will admit that it is unusual for them to show up without calling first. My father is an Army recruiter, but we still interviewed with several other branches(my dad present of course) to ensure my son was taking the best path for him. So, I don't think as one of your other answers so delicately put it "must have really needed to make his quota." |

I have heard of it as well. It is rare. All I can say is when you decided what you want in the military and what branch. Fight for it. They will tell you that they can't give you what you want for one reason or another, but as long as you scored high enough on your ASVAB, there is nothing they can deny you. They will try to sell you into which ever field they need to fill. Just don't fall for it. They got my cousin that way. Just make sure you are joining for the 'Right' reasons, this is not the time to join to pay for college. War is not coming... it is here and we have no idea how long it is going to last. |

My recruiter didnt show up to my door but he did call me.
Actually I find that kind of refreshing in a way.
I had contacted the Army quite abit and they never seemed to get around to contacting me back.
I sent in info to the Marines and I got a call the next day.
I know some take that as desperation, but my recruiter meets his quota, because the area I live in has a lot of military families and its what most end up going into.
As for the lying, yes unfortunately it does happen, but my recruiter has been pretty straight up and honest with me.
He hasnt sugar coated the details and has told me exactly what its like plus I do my own research as well, |

What did you expect to happen? The military is pursuing every possible lead of people who want to join. It's amazing to me, no one wants to sign up, but no one wants a draft either, yet EVERYONE likes their freedoms in America.
They do have a quota to fill and this person probably just followed up like he would anyone else. I wouldn't be too worried about it. |

They have their eyes on you now. The recruiters are only there because they don't like active duty. You need to THINK about joining and be sure. It could be a very bad mistake and you could be regretting it for 3 to 8 years. |

I would say if they were in the area, yes. They want to get you before you change your mind. If it is want you want to do then go for it. Just a tip just like any contract it does not matter what they promise you if it is not in your contract they do not have to do it. They could promise you medical school and end up making you a mechanic. A recruiter is just a sales person trying to make a quote. Other than that GO MARINES!! |

They are in the need of people and they would do anything to get you to get in but i have never heard that before that's just weird..
I asked my friend a former marine and he said they are not supposed too do that unless they ask you and you agreed on it! So other than that they should respect your privacy.. |

I am really surprised that they would be that aggressive. I had heard that enlistments were up because of all the layoffs and the bad state of the economy. It is indeed weird. Frankly, I would be leery of signing up with that recruiter because he could make you oral promises that would never be kept, if he is that desperate to make his quota. Be careful. |
