What if the soldier doesn't have a plastic or ceramic probe? Stick or twig instead? I was in the Navy and not the Army so I don't know?

Soldiers are still trained to probe for mines. The major difference is that they now use non-metallic "probes" made of plastic or ceramic instead of metal bayonets.

I knew some Combat Engineers that were in Bosnia in '95 who used to use local livestock for a quick field expedient method for clearing possible minefields. They said it worked pretty well, but the farmers weren't too keen on it. |

No. the metal would risk setting off magnetic mines; we use radio wave detecting equipment, infered, robots, etc. as an absolute last resort I guess someone would use a fiberglass or wood probe. I would just find a way around the suspected area or back up and start shooting the suspected mine field to set it off. |
