I am a Guardsman from Northern California. I have to say that the level of respect and appreciation has been great where I live in the North Bay of the SF Bay Area. The only exception is San Francisco itself.

I have had to be in uniform in SF on 3 occasions. One of which I was stopped at a gas station refueling a Humvee, and someone driving by screamed â€œBaby Killer!â€ and threw a half a mcdonalds burger at me.

The second occasion I was in my dress blue uniform on my way to perform as an honor guard of a CA soldier who was KIA in Iraq. I stopped in a starbucks to get coffee and a middle aged woman screamed â€œmurdererâ€ at me and threw her coffee all over my uniform. The starbucks employees called the police and stopped her from leaving. When the police arrived it seems that the responding officers were all veterans of the first gulf war. Irony is a wonderful thing.

Those are the exceptions to the rule, the majority of people treat me with respect while in uniform. What means the most to me is the simple act of someone crossing the room at a restaurant or store, shaking my hand and saying â€œthank you for your service.â€

the thing people need to understand regardless of their politics or feelings about war is that we make numerous sacrafices, just so you can continue to freely express whatever opinion you have on any issue. that is the freedom we fight for.

here are some things to remember about the sacrafices soldiers make.

You stay up for 16 hours

He stays up for days on end.

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

He goes days or weeks without running water.

You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.

He gets shot at as others are hit, and keeps moving forward.

You put on your anti war/don't support the troops shirt, and go meet up with your friends.

He still fights for your right to wear that shirt.

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.
__________________________

You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.
__________________________

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

You complain about how hot it is.

He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

He doesn't get to eat today.

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean.

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.
__________________________

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.
__________________________

You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.

He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet

You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.

He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.

You see only what the media wants you to see.

He sees the broken bodies lying around him.

We serve you, the people, and your respect is ALL we ask.

People refer to soldiers who served in Vietnam as baby killers, because the people of vietnam planted bombs on babies and small children, so those seemingly innocent children became enemies of American Soldiers and the children/babies ended up losing their lives. The Vietnamese didn't fight "fair" and so sadly the American soldiers got a nickname of baby killers. It's sad that people in america could be so heartless and cruel to the soldiers who fight to maintain our freedoms. I recommend all those people who think our men and women serving in the armed forces are "baby killers" to spend one month in a third world country (Iraq, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Tibet, Aphganstan, etc...) and see the depravity of the human condition there. Without our soldiers, America could be like that. We have more freedom in the US than any other place on earth. With that freedom, we also have the freedom to insult the very people who protect that freedom. Instead of calling our soldiers baby killers, they should ALWAYS be called HEROS!

I've heard of that happening to the troops that were in Iraq. I've also heard of them being spit upon.

I sure hope nobody does that when I'm around. They will be sorry.

The poster above is correct - the enemy uses children as soldiers. It's kill or be killed no matter the age of the foe.

Some do but when compared to the amount of ppl that did this in the Vietnam War, their numbers are minimal.

I sincerely hope not. My husband is a Vietnam Vet and it was done routinely during that time. The problem is that some of the "old" protesters have resurfaced, ie. Jane Fonda. People should ask themselves what she has ever done with her life that would make them want to listen to her? John Kerry is another one, the list is long and the noise they make is the same old tired stuff. People have a right to disagree with war I guess, but when this country has boots on the ground in any war, anywhere, they should temper the remarks and remember that our enemies are also hearing them.

no but a group from kansas(a so called christain group) have had the nerve to show up at military funerals and protest the war not because they consider the war unethical and unmoral but because they consider these deaths to be "Gods" judgment against america for allowing gays to marry. not only have these nuts given dishonor toward those who gave their lives for this country but they have also given added grief to that militry family. some how i just have a hard time seeing these folks as true christains. "no truer chirstain than he who giveth his life for another." so since only 2 percent of america has fought and died in this conflict what does that say about the rest of america?

War is not a game to be won or lost. No one wins a war. Just one side is lets messed up at the end than the other. Sadly I would have to say that people do call soldiers baby killers. I don't agree with this. The soldiers are fighting to protect us. The people inthe government that send our soldiers out to fight meaningless battles are the baby killers. I support our soldiers 100% but they are pawns in this. We need to stop blaming the soldiers and blame the senators, congressmen, and others that have sent our soldiers to die for no good reason.

When the nine year old standing by the hut watching you and your fellow troops walk by suddenly gets out an AK-47 and begins firing, he's no longer a baby. He's the enemy. There are children that are just as derranged and evil as the parents that raise them. During the vietnam conflict, children would walk up to soldiers offering to shine their boots, when they opened the shoe shine box a bomb hidden inside would detonate and kill many people. Children would also offer U.S. troops cold drinks, in the drink mixed with the ice would be broken glass. Children fight just like the adults in those cultures because human life is practically meaningless to them. They are raised to hate us and anyone not like them.

US soldiers are killers of terrorists only some are baby killers due to accidental fires or perhaps for those who are not indoctrinated properly about the provisions of Geneva Convention.

The US soldiers are baby killers, children killers, women killers, men killers.. they are all around killers... they go into other peoples land, where they are not welcome and murder them... When serial killers and spree killers , and mass murderers here in the US do that sort of thing they get sentenced to death. The soldiers do it and they get awards.
