Prepare you son for some obvious picking. but i am sure he has already experience some of it during his childhood.
Yes they use your last name , and i can hear it now...."Darling....what the **ck kind o f name is Drling? are you eyeball'n me boy? do you like me Darling?. Liking leads to loving, and loving leads to **cking. you trying to **ck me darling?"
just a small example, but tell him not to let it get to him. How he reacts will determine how bad it can or wont get.
good luck to him, and thank him for me for serving his country |

They'll probably just call him things that the YA! censor won't allow me to relate to you. It will be very creative though. |

If they call you by your name then you're lucky...they always come up with colorful nicknames. Your son will probably be called darling or sweetheart as a joke due to his last name. |

Yes they will call him that, and it will give them even more of an advantage over their usual torture of the guys. They will use it well XD. |

I agree with the last comment. You earn to be called by your alst name. I went to Fort Sill (all males) and they called us whatever they could think of!!! |

with the not being abel to curs around the soldiers in training. he will probably get picked on by his counter parts more than by the drill's.
he will be called by his last name and or just buy his rank you ern your name. you will not always hear your last name spoken only by his counter parts is where the jokes are going to come from. you will never hear your first name spoken . |

He will be called by his last name (per military protocol) or by a colorful nickname proceeded by "airman" or "recruit"..depending on service. Good thing his last name isn't what a guy in my BMT flight's name was. His last name was Pussi....not kidding. |

They are pretty good about making hilarious nicknames. Most of the time it'll be recruit Darling, I'm sure they'll think of something pretty comical. Tell your son to keep a good sense of humor. |

Last Name, and well they won't have to look far to come up with a nick name! He will be fine, and at least it will be memorable (for all). |

No- the use of first names is discourage and runs contrary to standard military customs and courtesies. They will use his rank and last name or just his last name. I had a person that I served with early in my career who had the last name Piggy. While at his first duty station after tech school he had it legally changed to Greer. They say "that which hurts us only makes us stronger" and I am sure you remember the song "A Boy Named Sue" that Johnny Cash sang that was a hit at one time. I hope your son has a sense of humor and can handle the pressure of Basic and things go well for him but it will definitely be noted and at times present a challenge for him in some ways. You might want to talk to him about this and prepare him mentally for that. |

DIs will call him anything they decide to call him. He's going to take a beating over his name. When he comes out the other end, he'll be more of a man.
Thank him and thank you for his and your service |
