Do we need military power to maintain world peace & why?

The pirates and Somalia are a prime example.

Pirates who have no law or power over them can do what they will. They do it because until recently, military power was not used on them. There was no reason stop taking ships, so they did. Because the merchant ships had no power for defense, they were taken advantage of by the pirates.

Now look at Somalia as a whole. No government, no military, no anything. Warlords and armed groups run around at will killing anyone they like. It demonstrates how people with a means will use it in a power vacuum. People with guns lord over those that do not in Somalia.

Our military and police prevent that from happening here, but that is not the only thing that does it. Military power and police authority need checks and balances. On the global scene, that doesn't exist, the UN is powerless, the US and other democracies do what they can, but overall, each country looks after their own before others.

If you have no military, other nations will see you as weaker and may chose to take your country over by force. You must have military power to maintain peace, and hopefully at some point you will not need the military power as anything but a reminder.

Yes. Military power is needed for security and keeping economic trade routes opened. Some argue that we can do away with a military as thus have world peace. However, the reality is that states need security in order to remain viable and a military helps give them that. The problem is that some states rely too much on their military. A true military power helps ensure world peace by dealing with threats such as the Somali pirates and terrorist organizations.

WWII - Europe liberated through the use of military power.

American Revolutionary War - military power won the freedom of America.

military power is essential for self defense in a world that poses a threat to national and individual sovereignty. world peace can only be maintained by a non violent understanding and respect for each culture, the worlds natural resourses, habit and wildlife....it cannot be maintained through a barrel of a gun. period.
