a good idea and decreased the chances they will stay in. If you go and fight in this war for several years do you think you should have access to free university in the U.S.?

The question is why not? It's a one time opportunity for people that cannot afford to get a higher education...This will benifit the person and of course the labor industry having a more educated workforce...I think this really benefit America in the long run...Also it will attract more and more (young adults) new comers because it's a good benefit. Maybe that some will leave the service, and some will stay depending on people choices and decisions...

Some military are on their 3rd tour in Iraq and yes, they earned the education! No I don't agree with McCain!

If Bush can give to his friends he should be able to support the troops at least once!

AP) An internal audit of some $8 billion paid to U.S. and Iraqi contractors found that nearly every transaction failed to comply with federal laws or regulations aimed at preventing fraud, in some cases lacking even basic invoices explaining how the money was spent.

Of the money paid during a five-year period - from 2001 through 2006 - $7.8 billion in payments skirted billing rules with some violations egregious enough to invite potential fraud, warned the Defense Department's inspector general.

"There is something very wrong when our wounded troops have to fill out forms in triplicate for meal money while billions of dollars in cash are handed out in Iraq with no accountability," said Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

In one example, $11 million was paid to a U.S. company without any record of what goods or services were provided, the IG wrote.

Overall, investigators estimated that the Army made some $1.4 billion in commercial payments that lacked even minimum supporting documentation, such as a certified voucher or invoice."

Probe Finds Pentagon Paid Nearly $8 Billion With Little Or No Oversight, Or Even Proof Of Work" AP WASHINGTON, May 23, 2008

Corporate Welfare; Even mothers on Taniff have to prove their rent!

If we can give it to big business fraudulently it would be better spent on educating our troops!

You should get *something* after even one term; but it might help to have increased incentives for longer service. Most military contracts are 4-6 years to begin with.

Vets deserve benefits for free college.

If you have served in combat, real combat, not just being in theatre smokin' and jokin', then you should get the benefits after 3 years. (Say, if you get the purple heart, any combat medal - such as bronze star WITH combat V, etc., and above, or equivalent to a combat infantry badge....just something to separate the extra risk taken in combat.)

If you're doing regular duty, even in theatre, then you have to do at least six to get extended benefits like this.

No. Our soldiers who put their lives on the line to serve their country deserve a good education and healthcare when they need it.

Why is it republicans like McCain are so patriotic if anyone questions the reasons for war but when it comes to supporting the troops they can only seem to talk about tax cuts???

Hillary J
No I do not, with better benefits they would be more inclined to stay in. The current benefits package isn't that great, and the GI bill is a mess. It only pays for a portion of your education unless you buy into other plans of it as well. I think it would encourage more people to sign up if they gave that GI bill to them. It's pretty much the same GI bill that was offered to the boys who fought in WWII. And the soldier's today are going through the same type of stuff that they did back then. These guys are buying our freedom for us, don't they deserve something in return?

knight
They served their country in time of war, how many are willing to do that? -they deserve that and more than most people.

yes. you serve your country and you get deserved benefits plus you are a better human being for it, more disciplined, better teammate.

McCain did propose an alternative with more Benefits the longer you were on active duty, which makes perfect sense to me.

College already is essentially free. It was for me anyway. I only used 1 program (Federal Tuition Assistance) out of several that I could use being a veteran and I still only paid $300 this year out of pocket to attend college full time. My GI Bill, which, granted, I had to pay a little into, essentially just became spending cash. Forget free...I got paid to go to school.

Now the question is what is considered "free"? What college costs is drastically different across the country. What one guy pays to be a resident student at Po-Dunk Community College is going to be drastically less than dude who is an out-of-state student at, say, Yale or something. What standard do you use? How much is the limit that the government is going to pay? Should it be permanent free schooling anytime and any where I want for the rest of my life? Just associates and bachelors degree or will it cover Masters and Ph.D.s? What happens if I decide I want a new degree and go back to school? Do I still get it for free or should I have to pay the second time around? What if I keep going back and keep failing out? Should the government keep paying for a failing student? The idea of "free university" is nice, but there are a lot of things that need to be hammered out first.

Yes.

I think it,s a good idea. the v.a. sure is not taking care of our loved ones. let the government finely do something good for a change.

Ex Air Force/Navy
Believe me it is not a good idea. Cost too much money.

bailie28
yes i do...no you shouldnt....you should earn it...and if you join and go fight you are getting your paycheck...on the other hand they have trained you hoping for the long haul..you get out ..its kinda wasted..you stay in you should be able to go to college...

archkarat
No but if they are worried about troops leaving for college they can always require longer terms of service to get the free ride to just stop loss them.
