Do you believe in the war on terrorism, at the cost of our liberates?

"I would rather die on my feet than to live on my knees."
Emiliano Zapata

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."
Benjamin Franklin

If not than why have we not marched to Washington with torches? Complacent people will die from apathy and ignorance.

Our country was founded by people willing to die for there freedoms and now we are willing to trade them away?

Dude:

Extreme times doesn't MEAN hiding in a hole and giving up your freedoms to a government that doesn't care about you.

I don't care WHO we are fighting. I do not think that sacrificing what our founding fathers shed blood for is going to diminish the threat of terrorism any.

A threat, which we helped sponsor and foster through decades of internal meddling in the affairs of other Middle Eastern nations.

So tell me again. Tell me HOW giving up our rights at home is going to defeat terrorism?

Do you enjoy being spied on illegally? Do you enjoy being singled out because your name matches some terrorist's on the No Fly Lists?

Do you enjoy have an act perpetrated by our own government which spells out that we have no rights in regards to illegal searches and seizures--all in the name of terrorism?

Do you enjoy the fact that your government considers anyone who isn't with them an "enemy of the state"?

I could go on, but I suspect that you and those people like you just don't CARE about what this country was originally founded on.

Not when you're just scared little weaklings hopelessly petrified by your own fears.

That's enough for you to say: "That's it! I'm giving up my rights! Mr. Bush: PROTECT MEEEE...!!! I'm scared!"

First there is no such thing as a "War on Terrorism"!

And no, we don't give up freedoms to those who want them taken away. Terrorism has nothing to do with them being taken away and all of them are unconstitutional! There is only ONE way to change the constitution and none have tried because it won't go anywhere, and they know it! You can't change the constitution by law!

I have no sources for my reasoning, just my opinions.
I believe it is due to the nature of the media; and the creation of a permenent state of fear in society. We are so convinced "they" are trying to take our freedom (they being TERRORISTS!!) that we are allowing the exact same to be taken of us. When Washington, DC cannot be walked through carelessly and as a simple tourist, there is something very wrong with this country. What can we do though?
Nothing, we can do nearly nothing about it

To above- But do we even have true liberties if we must surrneder our liberties to "maintain them"?

This has nothing to do with the current topic- but the constitution is not fully unchangeable at all times. Do research into some of the actions done by Lincoln during the Civil War.
As for liberties lost- the need to pass through an extreme paranoia of security. Gates blocking off the entire White House except a single view from one gate. Our nation's capitol, Washington DC, being barricaded at every turn. Upon visiting London this past winter, the security is all too clear in the US.

I do believe that the government has the responsibility to take appropriate decisive measures to protect its citizens from terrorism of any stripe.

Having said that, I am very sceptical of terms like "War on terrorism." Is this a "Hot" war, requiring a declaration by Congress, or is it a metaphorical war, like "War on drugs," or "War on crime." If the former, do we have a set of war aims, and an identifiable enemy, with an identifiable territory? The answer to all these questions is no. "War" on terrorism is a continuous, non-ending condition, and it is hard for me to envision what "final victory" would be like. We will never have a state of affairs where militant fundamentalists of whatever faction foreswear violence against the US. Thus, any compromise to our civil liberties in the name of "War on terrorism" is a permanent compromise, and had better be justified on their merits rather than the need to fight a "war."

I have tried to make this point many times. It's sad that people will so willingly give up freedom for security. One guy said,'What good is freedom is I'm dead?' How sad. I'd rather be dead than enslaved ANY day of the week. I guess I'm in the minority.

terrorism did not start the problems that this country is having
these people are just using that excuse and not really looking
at the real problem. We are all ways sticking our nose in
other countries business than dealing with our own.

I'll keep it simple, the gov't wants to protect our citizens and their rights and freedoms, so deal with it.

to protect our country from enemies, both foreign and domestic.
As president Bush stated , you are with us or against us.
Which are you son?
What has changed since those innocent people were slaughtered on 9/11?

Why do people always misquote Franklin?

The quote is:
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

We've also given up no liberties. I can still do exactly the same things I've always been able to do.

Try harder.

Every time some one brings this up, I wonder what liberties (other than the one to spell words correctly) we have lost.

Pick up any paper and there are editorials, news articles, letters, that offer a wide range of opinions including many downright hostile to the seated government at whatever level.

Turn on the TV or radio and hear people put forward the most outrageous ideas and criticism without fear of retribution. We definitely have freedom of the press.

And I'm not even talking about the internet. So we have freedom of speech...as long as you don't say something offensive to gays, blacks, Mexicans, Muslims, women, old people, hearing impaired, parents of autistic children.

With the last few weeks, I've worshipped at my son's wedding at a Catholic church and went to a Baptist service with my in-laws. So we have freedom of religion.

I've driven across state lines and flown from California to Oregon via Nevada. So we can still travel wherever we want to.

Been a long time--Never!!--since somebody came by my house and forced their way in and conducted a search without warrant. And if they did, they couldn't use what was found, because of our robust court system.

We still freely elect our local, country, state, and national representatives.

There is still lively debate over issues.

People are free to travel to other countries, although as of yet not the same freedom as people who come into our country without going through customs or border inspections of any kind.

We are not conscripted into military service nor service of any kind.

We can sit home, swill our beer or snort our coke, watch anything from Bugs Bunny to Debby Does Dallas on our big screen TV's, cheat on our wives, cheat on our taxes, cheat on our buddies at poker, without fear of retribution.

Some of you should try living in a country that really has lost some liberty.

Move to Saudi Arabia or China or, better yet, North Korea, to get some perspective.

Otherwise, I also have the liberty to tell you to shut your mouth.

It does not take a war on terrorism to have us give away our liberties. We are doing it daily. Everything from the right to smoke (although I don't think you should smoke around your kids like in a closed in car), to dying for your country/state/county/city (i.e fireman, police officers and the military) but not allowing that someone to drink. No child left behind is another example.

Big government takes away the liberities of the little guy/city/county/state all the time and we as a country countinue to allow the bullying.

That said I do believe in the war on terrorism. I know if we do not stop these idiots they will continue their effort to do away with America and Americans. We have got to let them know that we will not back down or give in (i.e. hostages). That is what this country was founded doing.

I know that this is not a popular belief but its mine.

Dude
Extreme times call for extreme measures. What good are having liberties if you are dead? The people that died on Sept. 11 don't have any liberties anymore. Remember, as Americans we have the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
