Do you believe military people have lost thier values?

It seems all of the soldiers involved in todays military are more interested in the pay and benefits than the inital job. It seems everyone has lost this values ,and the main purpose of the military. You hear so much complaining about being deplyed to Iraq from soldiers in todays military. So do you think the soldiers have lost their values?

I'm 19..Mom,sister,uncles,grand-dad has served in the military and dad has served in the military. I'm based from military backgrounds.

So to say I know nothing about military..Bogus!

Chet, at 16, you have not yet served in the military, though I'm sure your father has.

Soldiers earn every penny they make. They cannot be overpaid for the job they do. They've earned their benefits, every one of them and more. Particularly our combat veterans have earned much more than they will ever receive, including your father or mother.

And while they do complain of the stress it puts on their relationships and social life, few truly harbor regrets of their service.

No. Military personnel have not lost their values. They still follow orders, even though they may disagree with them. The civilian leaders of our military personnel are the ones who have lost their values.

The absolute right of soldiers is to complain. It's about the only right they retain. :-) And they're merely human, and are just as concerned with making a living as anyone else. But they're the ones whose lives are on the line. And they volunteered. So lay off them.

Where do you get your information? My nephew did 2 tours in Iraq and he and the guys in his squadron LIVE the values of our military and our great nation. They value teamwork, service, courage, morality and honesty. Do they care about pay and benefits, of course they do. They are young guys and many have wives and young babies to take care of. But they are there first and foremost to serve our country and keep us safe.

Do you actually know anyone in the military? Men in the military don't really get paid much. When my husband was in Afghanistan he was only paid around 30 thousand a year. That is nothing compared to a "civilian" career. Honestly, I don't think the military is paid enough for putting their lives on the line so people like us can be typing on a computer in a free country. Soldiers have not lost their values, they just want to take care of their families and if that means to go overseas and fight then so be it.

just like the media focus's on all the negative in Iraq, so do you, i know plenty of people who have gone on to do 2,3 tours, people in the military as well as civilians will always complain, i know i did......Semper Fi

No. I think they have a lot more than just the pay. They are pretty much assured they are going to go to Iraq right now and possibly lose their lives. Pay doesn't do them much good when they are dead. They seem to be more interested in being proud and defending the country. Sorry!!

When you listen to the mainstream liberal media, they are not going to interview those whose opinions differ from the story that they are trying to create. Liberal bias exists because they are human like the rest of us...if you hate liver, you are not going to do stories on how great liver is.

I think that most soldiers are there to do their jobs to the best of their ability, it is the very vocal minority, just like here in the Good ol' USA, and they want to be heard.

sportyarteest
well it kinda doesnt help that when 'some' get there they are only suppost to be there for 6 monthns and they are told... "nope, your here for a year"!! wouldnt that make you complain a little! and people complain everday about their jobs.... even waking up in the morning weather they need to do something that day or not.... complaining is a part of life... everyone does it!

Mike A
As a soldier I am offended by your faulty generalization. No we have not lost our values. We live by the Army Values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. Yes there are alot of soldiers who are concerned about their benefits, the ones who have families to take care of and other responsibilities.

Have you served in the Armed Services making you justified in your blind criticism?

no they just miss their loved ones. it's hard to kill someone as well. just think about it no family no home no one to kiss good night it's a hard life. not everyone can do it. so what if they gripe a little, give them a brake.

Twinkie
There is always going to be certain ones that complain but I believe the majority of men and women love this county and the values that our country stands for. Our country is founded on freedom for all. That is why so many people want to be an American! I believe our country has a lot of compassion for others and want them to have the same freedom that we have grown up with. If you study all the wars really that is what everything is about "FREEDOM"!

The liberal media need to talk to the guys who really care about what is going on. Not the few complaining. I have talked to a lot of guys who served over there and they really care about what is going on and pissed about what is going on in the media. No they have not lossed there values and complaining is because our military is too small and they have to keep going back over and over again.

I love the soldiers, more than anything on earth. They are my family. Even so much as my sister's boyfriend just proposed to her before he is going to Iraq. They are engaged now, which makes him family as far as I am concerned. He hates the war more than anything, but he is still going. I hate the war too, as I have lost a 1st cousin over there. He is doing his duty, and he is a better man than I. As far as I am concerned, he has more values than most of this country.

No they have NOT lost their values , but I do wonder about yours , .It's a military person's right to complain , if you ever do anything worth while in your life , you just might go up to a service man or woman and THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE , so you can sit all cozy and complain along with the rest of your mis-guided friends ? Just go somewhere and get a life , .Retired military..........and proud of it !

Gunny Bill
If you think it's wrong for military to complain about pay look at their civilian counter parts doing the same job! The military is way under paid. Last major adjustment (other than cost of living) was back in the 1970's.

The ones complaining about deployments are the liberals and liberal media. Troops are volunteering to go back. Next time your at the mall ask a recruiter.

Being interested in benefits...like education? Sounds a lot more healthy than drugs and parties that a lot of kids their age are concerned about.

Whitty
As always, it's very unfair to lump everyone into one group and say one thing applies to them all. For every story you hear about malcontents there are dozens of others who quietly do their jobs with pride and do them extremely well. The media tends only to tell the stories about the unhappy ones.

lochmessy
No, I do not believe that military people have lost their values, I just feel that they do not want to go to Iraq any more then they wanted to go to Viet Nam. Both are wars that never should have happened and the military people feel that they are risking their lives for a war that is Bush's war not a real war. The people in the Military didn't argue going to war in Korea or in WWII, they had a job to do. I have a cousin who is in the Navy, so I hear from him what a lot of the people think and a lot of them, like him, have found ways to keep themselves from going over to fight. They believe in our country, but not in the war. their values are in the right place, the same place as most Americans.

susi
People in general have lost any set of values! This is our major problem in the USA!!!!!

What values are you talking about. Pay and Benefits?? ok so they get paid not even minimum wage when you figuire it and if you want to throw in the "incentives like Family sep and Combat etc.." i dont know a guy over there that will not give that back to be home but they are sticking to those MORALS AND VALUES and doing thier job.
How can you say that leaving thier families and going to a foriegn country where they may not come home from entails having no values.
That and Benefits have you read anything about the benefits of the military because i have been a Military wife for almost 13 years and honestly yeah there are benefits but honestly in the civilian world they wouldnt be much. But my husband likes his job and the Marines he is with now and that is what matters to me.
He is teaching our children morals and values by doing exactly what he is doing.

buzzy70a
HELL NO,they have more values then others

If you were being deployed to a place where you could possible lose your life, or at least have to leave your family for 12-15 months.... Wouldn't you be complaining? I bet you would! Not many soldiers join for the benifits or pay alone. Yeah the benefits are nice, not worth losing your life for, but pay...... Lets just say you need to talk to some of the lower enlisted soldiers..... They will tell just how great pay is, that is sarcasm by the way. There are way to many military families (at least in the Army) that are on programs like wick! Now you tell me how the hell they would be joining just for the pay. More than you think or believe, a lot of soldiers join because they think it is their duty to do so, their duty to protect our way of living.
So no I don't think that just because they complain about having to deploy means they have lost their values.
We all know that this is part of their job as a soldier, but are you going to tell us that you never in your entire life complained about a job that you had to do? We are human and all humans complain about something.

Canadian
No, but the media publicizes the ones who have no morals.

I think great intergrity is a requirment for those who are going to use violence as a means of maintaining peace as a career.

the war in iraq is a war we shouldnt have started. it is a war that took my best friends fathers life, it is a war that took my dad from me for 2 years(hes in the army, he was in the first shipment of soldiers to Afganistan and iraq) it is a war that makes me lie awake at night and wonder if my fiance is gonna call me saying he has to go to(hes in the navy). its a war that wasnt needed, that is killing our innocent men and women. but they go over there, and they defend us, they die for us, and hell yeah, they have the right to complain.

I do think that SOME have, many others have not. Many are still there to be proud of the uniform that they put on everyday. And yes, many get pissed when they get deployment orders because they only signed up for College tuition & medical coverage.

turntable
no...i think it has become a human problem...humanity today is not what is was even 50 some years ago...ever since the attack on Americas values from the left our values have been going down the toilet while all sorts of crime is rising, and what was once wrong is called right and what was once right is called wrong...today's military is a byproduct of that...not all though...i am sure there are very loyal soldiers who do sign up for the right reasons...

bucknasty
i don't think they have lost their values, i just think they are smarter in today's military, why else would someone join the military if its not for the pay and benefits? patriotism is all but dead, sure some join for patriotic reasons, but not if their smart. why would someone risk their life if they could not get something in return? i mean death is not honorable, but having money and being around to support your family is.

Ex Air Force/Navy
Well, face the real facts. If the Military told the troops they would no longer get paid then they would quit. Soldiers would put their guns down. Now look at the insurgents. They fight for free. ( They don't get a pay check every week) So guess who will win in the long run? Sure! The insurgents.

jamie s
Iraq is a bogus war.. By complaining, the soldiers are showing their morals...
