Do you have to be killed in Action, to be labelled a Hero?

A hero is someone who puts his own life on the line in an attempt to save someone else. The firefighters and rescue workers who went into the towers before the collapse were heroes. The unlucky ones who were there working and didn't make it out were just that. Unlucky. (btw living people can win the Congressional Medal of Honor.)

No, most that die are heroes in everyone's eyes, but not labeled as such. The media does a poor job prtaying the ones that have been labeled a hero. This war has produced one Medal of Honor, yet the media is not making a huge ordeal over it because they are slanted in their reporting. Most people couldn't name him without using google or yahoo to find him.

As said before, history only remembers of people who died in the middle of something important, such as a war, a terrorist attack, or who are killers.

Unfortunately our minds love gory things, even the best remebered events from our childhood are the ones that mad emore impact, and they are usually the worst events ever.

Do you want to be a hero? or do you want to live? This is something people always say. Maybe is then true that to be a Hero you need to die. Just see examples in History, and most people remembered nowadays are Heroes because they were killed.

its my opinion that if your in the military at all your a hero. however if you loose your life during duty your an extra special hero.

No, you get the same amount of points for killing the enemy; and since you will be alive to perhaps kill some more, you have a decided advantage over the dead guys.

No, there are lots of hero's & lots of medals given to live Military soldiers including the Bronze Star. There are heroes in everyone's lives - firefighters, policemen, highway patrolmen, Dads, or someone who helped you in ways that make them your hero.

Most people get a Medal of Honor posthumously, though the percentage of officers alive is higher than that of enlisted!

Audi Murphy and Alvin York were Hero's. They were both alive!

If the "hero" in question is fighting for a just cause then one would consider him a hero, but if he is just so happen to die in combat
without motive then that would make him a moron .

Heros come in all shapes and forms.

Some of the bravest people I have ever met are the staff of the Red Cross.

At the end of the first Gulf War I was tasked to go to Bagdahd to collect allied POWs - the unarmed staff of the Red Cross had put themselves inbetween Iraqi soldiers who were intent on harming the POWs. These brave people stood infront of some of Saddam's henchmen and politely told them to bugger off. One of these people was a 62 year old grandmother from Switzerland who sent away several of these thugs with a smile on her face. She was a real hero.

Nope. Jessica Lynch and her group got lost, got captured, and had to be rescued. But she's a hero according to the president.

In my opinion anyone who goes over there and accpets the task of honoring their obligation is a hero.

Just remember that a hero is not someone who is just doing their job. You may crawl on your belly through a minefield while being shelled and then bayonet charge an mg position with nothing more than a sharp knife made by the lowest bidder to rescue a crying 4 year old from being molested.....but this does NOT make you a hero if you are a soldier...it is their job

If however you are a librarian, then it is an extrordianry feat and thus you are a hero.

Pay attention to the part "...above and beyond the call of duty"

So, no, do you not have to be killed in action. A desk driver sprinting across a road to pick up a baby about to be killed by a acar is a hero because that is not required by their job and life. If a police or fireman did it they are not a hero as they are expected to.

Note: Not everyone who dies in action is a hero. Come on some people get hit by hiding in a corner soiling themselves and thus getting all their mates killed too

Note 2: As much as I admire the firefighters who went into the towers, that does not make them heroes. As far as anybody knew at that point the towers were not going to collapse so the danger was only equivalent to what you americans pay them to do. Is someone a hero for doing only what they are paid to do?
