My husband is going to be traveling home for the birth of our child (already approved) in a few months. However before leaving he was told he could travel back (international flights not AMC/MAC flights) with just his military id. However now that he is deployed he has heard that he will need a passport to come home.
If you are military/or military spouse/dependant and know the answer to this I would appreciate it. We just need to get everything prepared ahead of time. Will an active duty military person need a passport to travel home for personal reasons from South America?
Additional Details
The main issue is he is deployed and does not have a passport and they wont ship a passport if you get one in another country... so I have no idea how he would get one.

Usually it is required that AD military if traveling on orders do not require a Passport as long as they have the orders with them. This includes on commercial and military aircraft. If he is on deployment and coming back it shouldn't be a problem.
But it is advised that you still have a passport because of rerouting, delays and not showing to everyone that you are military. He should be able to get one fairly quickly if it does it through the embassy.
Edited to add: if he is by a major city with an Embassy there, it is possible he can apply through them. But if he isn't near one then he should apply for one when he comes home on R&R for the baby through the Post Office then he can have it mailed to him. |

He does not need a passport. He should take a copy of the orders that originally put him in South America and a copy of his SIGNED leave paperwork. When I PCS'd to Germany the AF never even gave me an official passport, I paid for a tourist passport just to make things easier and because I plan on traveling extensively through Europe, but I do not need one and neither should your hubby. |

Tell him to get a passport. Every US consulate in the world can issue him one - within 72 hours if he pays an expedite fee. |

With the way things are going right now, they could change the regulation ten times between now and then. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the both of you to have one. |

He should always have his passport on him to avoid any unexpected delays. Better safe than sorry. Never leave home without it. He will have his orders, but should always have his passport for anything unexpected just to get through customs faster for something like a death or family emergency. You should also send him with a photo copy of it in his bag, and keep one with you in your safe. |

He does not NEED a passport. His military ID will suffice. With that said, I would get a passport, because I wouldnt want anyone within sight to see my ID. No need to be a target. Just look like everyone else. |
