Do you respect people who are fit and have nothing else to do that don't join the military?

Do you respect people who are fit and have nothing else to do that don't join the military?

If you met some guy who was like 30, fit, unemployed, and had no prospects of employment for awhile, doesn't really do anything anyway, and has been asked to join the military, but said "no", would you still respect him?

as a military member I know the answer I SHOULD give but I'm going to say yeah, I'd still respect them.
Of course, personally I think everyone should give or do SOMETHING for their country and not just sit back and reap all the benefits..but I'm not naive and I now that is too idealistic and ideal for such a varied society as ours.

Absolutely; in our current situation I wouldn't wish a military career on anyone.

absolutely..I don't want someone in the military that does not want to be there. He will be a liability on his peers there. I respect him for his honesty.

It's totally his choice, he might be scared or has a family. I say that not fighting for the country is a choice everyone has to make, the goverment can't force anyone to do anything.

If he said "NO I don't want to go into the military" then he is a very smart man. Yes I would respect him. Then I'd give him a good job where I work.

the military is not for everyone, although I do think that the majority of people could join the military, even though many don't think it's right for them. There are thousands of jobs and different branches.

But I respect everyone's choices, good or bad. Those choices are for them to make. I can only give my suggestions and opinion.

FYI- being fit has really nothing to do with it. There are plenty of unfit people in the military. (unfortunately) also some dumb blondes got in too, so it really doesn't matter if you are "fit" physically or mentally......

Yes because no one wants to join the military and die for something no one believes in.

I respect those who join. That's the beauty of living in America. Some countries take little boys of a certain age from their parents and teach them how to fight wars. In other words they begin to brain wash them.

Here we have a freedom of choice.

The choice to serve is a very personal one, and I'd not judge on that basis. I probably wasn't perfect recruiting-poster material when I was in uniform. But if the guy's fit and 30, why's he unemployable, and what could he offer the military?

Kiana VCL
I'd actually love him for doing that... in my view joining the military is the most stupid idea for "spending" one's time ( no offense to anyone who does otherwise, it's your life anyway )

And why do people think "this" is America ?!? you can ask that question (or use Yahoo for that matter) from anywhere... don't you think ?

no guy has to join the military. i'm against the draft completely. yes i know that there isn't a draft right now, but if there was i would try to find a job in canada so i would have to become a canadian person. that's not draft dodging exactly. i'm somewhat phisically fit, but i'm not joining the military, i would defend this country if i wanted to, but sad to say, i'm a chicken. and i'm against guns. completley.

Correction, the cutoff age for the U.S. Military is now 42. To answer the question though, the U.S. Military is an all-volunteer institution at this point in time, so the decision to enlist for people who are fit to serve is solely theirs, and I respect anyone who steps forward to protect the existence of this nation.

I think anyone who is fit for duty and is of age should defend their country. Weather they already have a job or not.
