Do you think as the war continues, they will enact a mandatory draft in the U.S.?

What are some of your thoughts on the subject of a draft? Do you think if a Dem. is elected we won't ? Will they draft youngsters or the top end of the draft age? Additional Details guglimo.. you make some poignant statements that each of us should evaulate as we draw conclusions as to whether a mandatory draft is in the best interest of one's home country.

Personally, I'm appalled that it hasn't been reenacted already. Sadly we have Congressmen who are looking out for their jobs rather than the country.
I don't know if its reenactment has anything to do with who is in office. We've had a Republican in office for seven years and don't have a draft. We've had both Democratic and Republican Congresses... still no draft.
I don't know about Obama, but both Clintons hate the military. Were it up to them, there would be no military. The Republicans have a religious fanatic who will also probably destroy the military as something evil. I'd guess McCain might be more pro-military than any of the rest. But whoever is in the Oval Office will have to contend with a Congress that pretty much consists of wimps only interested in the cushy job with all the under-the-table benefits, and couldn't care less about the country..
I know there are some guys in the military who have concerns about the motivation of draftees, and who question their interest in backing up their buddies when they didn't really want to be there. I've also seen posts by "volunteers" who were only interested in benefits. Personally, I'd seriously question the motivation of these mercenaries. I'd be afraid the enemy might offer them a better package... and that they'd be dumb enough to buy it.
My opinion is that there seems to be a growing number of lazy, complacent, self centered, irresponsible, spoiled kids in this country. They live off the country. They are educated by the country. The country protects them from their own stupidity. But when the country asks for their support, they start coming up with excuses.
"I don't support this war. I can't join. If it were any other war... one of which I approved, I'd be first to enlist."
"I don't like the Commander and Chief. Any other Commander in Chief... one of which I approved, I'd be first to enlist."
These are easy because nobody in their right mind is totally enamored with any administration or war.
But the one I really like is, "I won't volunteer to fight in some foreign country. I'll join when the enemy is marching up my streets." First, if the enemy is marching up the streets he has destroyed the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, all the reserve units, our missile defense, our police, CIA, FBI, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts...everybody. And these morons really think they can make a difference? Second, it takes two to three months to get a recruit to the point where he or she is of minimal danger to himself/herself, and to those with whom they serve. Add to that a few months more to get them trained in a specialty. It'll take six months before the person is a trained fighter. Do these would-be heroes really believe the enemy will stop their march up their street wile they train? Hardly. These folks will be dead before they can throw the first rock. "But," they explain, "I have a gun. I'm a hunter." You'll be dead before you can fire the first shot. Deer seldom shoot back... and never shoot first.
A draft would get these lazy, self centered, spoiled kids of their complacent, irresponsible posteriors.
The long-term benefits of a draft are impressive. Let's suppose that in 2008 every able-bodied man and woman between the ages of 18 and 24 began 4 years in the military. Suppose that each year after that the same age group was drafted. Even if only 10% make the military a career, at the end of 40 years about half the people in the US will have had some military training.
Now remember Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania without reaching the terrorist's target? There were only a handful with military training on that flight. Suppose half the passengers had been military trained. A handful could deflect the plane. Had there been 50, a hundred, the passengers could have taken the plane back. Same is probably true on the other flights that were hijacked.
Now, suppose the enemy destroys our 30,000,000 strong military. Now he has to face about 150,000,000 people who are trained militarily and who are now fighting to protect their homes. |

a draft really isnt that necessary at the time...insurgencies are hiding which means that their forces are most likely weakening, they tried to look powerful but it isnt going to last forever because they dont have many nations on their side |

There's no way they will enact a mandatory draft. |

no they will not enact a draft. Democrat or Republican, there will be no draft.
The army and marine recruiters hit enough of their goals to keep the military afloat. The draft buzz is all just limpwristed hysteria caused by watching the news too much |

No, not a chance, and let's say somehow there was a draft, as an American citizen you better be willing to go.
If not we should say hey come to this island if you want to dodge the draft then we bomb that island |

If a draft were enacted, and I think it will happen, maybe within the next 5-10 years, they will begin drafting from the lower age groups and move on up to people aged 35. |

no draft as we speak. there isn't enough of a demand for new troops to warrant one. |

There would have to be a much more serious threat for that to happen and if something did, people would sign up much like they did after 9-11.
Despite whatever you feel about Iraq, there are people that still love their country and would defend it. |

Jeesh, Gugliam sure sounded off.....kind of boring by the end.
I don't like a draft. Though they should have more incentives to get people to join and not be so picky about who they are getting to join.
I know boys and girls willing and wanting to join and they won't take them. They weren't druggies or criminals either. |
