Do you think gays should be allowed to serve in the military?

I was having a "don't ask, don't tell" argument with a (gay) colleague today, and it's my personal opinion that gays shouldn't be allowed to serve because it would make the whole battalion uncomfortable, worrying about whether the guy/girl was checking them out.. I've had this discussion with my husband (he's a Marine) and he agrees with me. What do you think?

Maybe I should have made this clear from the beginning - I don't care about the opinion of those of you who are in no way affiliated with the US military.

I think that any person who wants to dedicate his or her life in service to their country should have the right to do so. At one time, the military segregated members by race..something we know was morally wrong. Denying someone the right to serve simply because they love someone you may not approve of is no different. Sad as it may be, there are people in uniform who are still "uncomfortable" around people of different religons or ethnic backgrounds..however, if they used that as a basis to try and avoid working with them or sharing living space, they would find themselves facing a very angry commander and possible disciplinary action...again, how is the fact someone is gay any different? Male military members check out females they serve with...females check out males...however, if they take it beyond a subtle glance or two, they can find themselves facing harassment charges. Everyone is entitled to thier feelings and thoughts..however, unless a person is physically unfit to serve, the idea of equality applies to all...regardless of race, religon or who you love. I have known many gays in the military, who were dedicated, decorated and loved the life.

that's kinda ignorant to think that someone gay couldn't perform as good as anyone else.or to think that he /she would be attracted to anyone there.most wouldn't reveal that they were.

I was a Vet 1979- 1992 ARMY!!! I don't want them in the group shower or tent with me!!!! Gay is not OK! It's naturally wrong! If it is naturally right then a guy could give birth!

They should be allowed to, but it would be hell for them, because everyone would be thinking exactly what you're thinking. So what if a guy checks another guy out? They should be flattered. It's not like they're going to go rape him or anything. Gay people are people too.

I don't think gays should be drafted, though. That way I can claim I'm gay to dodge.

I have no problem with gays, I've known many and they are fine. But in the military, gays bring an extra distraction that at times in battle will only result in more casualties.
