Yes but that was a long time ago. It is time to move on now and look to the future, not the past. |

Yes, and the English were treated badly by the Normans, the Native Americans were treated badly by European settlers, and so on. But let's look forward, not back. |

Yep pretty bad, but in those days had the situation been reversed Ireland would have done the same. Ireland often made allies with England enemys. |

Well it wasn't just the 19th Century. Its all the way back to the 12th. And to the above Africa and Asia didn't have to deal with the British for as long as the Irish did. The Irish were treated bad by them there is no doubt in that. |

A brief answer is yes they were and still would be if they could get away with it.
I am not surprised by some of your answers:-
"This was all a long time ago, lets forget it, let bygones be bygones" etc etc.
I am a Scot not Irish , I wasnt around at the time when England raped and pillaged our land, but I do know about it, I am not about to forget about it. Have things really changed?
The North sea, (Scottish) has so far been robbed to the tune of over £220 billion , (lot of money isnt it?)
Many contries in the UK and overseas have been robbed by the English, I cant just sit back and say "Ah well lets just forget it"
Read up as much as you can on the whole history of the English , make up your own mind |

Ireland was a threat to England as the French where going to use a fellow Catholic country to launch attacks against England, Scotland and Wales (please remember the Union had been in place since 1707)
Also remember it was Irish MP's who sold out Ireland for British money by the joining the union in 1801.
The people of Ireland didnt like it but at the time it was survival of the fittest and strongest

no doubt about it! There was an inter-generational and ongoing dispossessing destruction of the Irish for centuries.
A lesser known fact is how the Cromwells enslaved perhaps as many as 200,000 Irish men, women and children and sent them to the Caribbean as plantation workers. They were unsuitable for the climate however so the English landlords began using African slaves instead.
The level of sheer crudity and brutality that was shown toward the Irish can't be easily explained by a 'winner takes all' attitude as some of the apologists of the English here try to say. . |

Kisser represents mentality that give birth to the Black and Tans.
The English never allow themselves to be honest about their history , they are a truly deluded bunch. |

If you go back far enough you will find that everybody has been treated badly by everybody else at some point.
Now its time to get over it and live in harmony, otherwise people of all races continue to die because of things which happened hundreds of years ago .
Budding Author - Since when did the North Sea belong to Scotland? If you go more than 12 miles it becomes international waters.
My Parents were proud of our Scottish heritage, but reading your "Braveheart" style I'm aware of things which never happened to me but I'll never forget anyway is just childish.
The sooner you guys get to go and run your own affairs with your own industries and without our subsidy the better.
And as for the oil revenues they will still go to wherever the oil companies decide to declare their origination and manufacture, not where the pipes come ashore. |

Yes , we did treat the Irish badly , but there is nothing we can do about it now , there are a lot of things we should have not done , and If I could change them I would but I can't - I am ashamed to be English , it's a terrible country - we were like Nazi's and did the world no good |

How dare you people sweep 800 years of oppression misery death destruction economic hardship under the mat.
you people sold irish into slavery killed us took our land took our resources and fight several wars and rebbelions all through which you "people" carried out horrible reprisals against the Irish.
In 1921 you burned down most of Cork city
In 1916 you shot the leaders of the Easter Rising and rounded up several thousand and interened them in welsh prisons
In 1798 You decided to punish the irish People through Pitch capping
putting boiling hot Tar on their heads and ripping the scalp off their skulls
you "planted" protestant settlers in the northern part of our country now we are still oppressed by you. and in 1921 with the declaration of the Irish free state you "people demanded Compensation
you English are scum for what you did to my people and my country.
You will never ever be forgiven. |

Yes, they were, and the history goes way back over several hundred years. When the english decided to go Protestant, the Irish were determined to remain Catholic. The english hated this, and did everything they could to oppress the catholic Irish. The english would kick irish farmers off their own land, and give it to english landlords instead. For a long time under english rule, Catholics(i.e., the majority of the Irish population) were not allowed to participate in the government of their own country, they were banned from certain professions and certain educations. For a more complete list, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_Laws_(Ireland)
The english generally brutalised Ireland during their entire rule, and there were several rebellions right from the start.
If you were specifically interested in the 19th/20th Century, you could read more about the Black and Tans, english paramilitaries in Ireland. They would burn down irish farms and villages, and kill innocent irishmen at will. This is a real quote from a british officer called Smyth: "If the persons approaching (a patrol) carry their hands in their pockets, or are in any way suspicious-looking, shoot them down." He promised that no english soldier would ever get in trouble for shooting an irishman, no matter what.
A specific example of B&T brutality:
During the first Bloody Sunday(1920), these Black and Tans fired over 100 rifle rounds against the spectators of a football match in Croke Park, Dublin, killing several innocent irishmen, including football players.
I won't try to cover all of the atrocities the english committed in Ireland, but there's no doubt that they weren't very nice. Just like the US, the irish had to fight a war of independence to break away from english rule. |

Yes, the Potato Famine and Plantation (not in that order, obviously, lol) were the worst atrocities. And the UK lectures others on human rights, bloody cheek ! |

all country's have a history of violence, and yes both sides treated each other badly, but now Ireland are our friends and together we will fight to keep out of the EU,
