Do you think that america has lost a lot of respect from other countries over the Iraq war?
|
I like america a lot, though i don't like our president. At the moment i live in NZ and almost everybody here thinks that the president is bad and that the Iraq war is completely pointless. A lot of shows that aren't made in the US are teasing americans. what do you think. Additional Details Sophie: don't diss NZ they have perfect right to say that they don't want warships into their country. America's warships should stay in their own country or whatever country their America's fighting in.

As a United States Soldier, I must say that even I respect my country just a bit less. Don't get me wrong, I love America to death but lately we haven't been making the brightest choices.
I've served 2 tours in Iraq and there were MANY times when I questioned my actions. I did as I was told and I killed for my country but I always wondered at the same time, what am I doing here? I didn't know who I was killing nor why.
We had no business going to Iraq. But I assure you once Bush steps out of office, everything will turn around. Bush screwed everything up. He just wanted oil. I SAW oil brigades harvesting oil from the reserves after we captured any city or town.
Lady Liberty is a beautiful, loving, and pure lady, but the world caught her with her pants down..........for 8 long years.

Yes unfortunately ,you did get sympathy from a lot of nations after 9/11 ,but your not alone Britain has also lost its respect (if we had any in the first place) .You are just experiencing what we have suffered for centuries , we are such a tiny little country but we always jump in to give support to whoever needs it.
Lots of countries have suffered acts of terrorism and until 9 /11 you have been relatively free of it , some are saying that the terrible act of mindless murder was a direct result of your President .The only problem is that the young Americans are growing up with a large chip on their shoulders and are Brit bashing on this site each day ,when we are supposed to be on the same side .

Michael , I think you are wearing rose coloured glasses, take a look at this before you big yourself up.

Oh dear here we go again , you have just been knocked down a peg or 2 you will get over it .The world is a nasty place you cant always win every argument , but while you are sitting back licking your wounds , beware some one may sneak up behind you again ,because dont forget people do fight back. |

No. I don't think so.
I don't think that respect was ever there.
The GWOT and Iraq are just the flavor of the day.
Before 9-11, I spent 3 years in Europe and saw nothing but people bashing the USA. When I was in the middle east before 9-11, I saw the same thing.
When I was in college in the 1990s' people were saying the same things, just instead of Iraq, it was about capitalism, corporations, oil...
Its all the same song, just a different verse.
+++++++++++++++
That's interesting, you talk about dissing the USA, but tell somebody else they can't diss NZ? Kind of hypocritical isn't it? |

Yes, absolutely.
After 9-11, we were sympathized and assisted by hundreds of countries around the world.
Most of them have abandoned us since then because of our poor leader and crappy foreign policy and diplomacy treatment. |

To objectively answer your question, without regards to who is in the right or wrong, yes, we have without a doubt lost alot of respect in the world.

Throbbing Hood

Yes it has , but mainly because the young American people are so shocked that this atrocity could happen ,(to their country ,that is ingrained in them that they are biggest super power ) .They a still reeling from the shock and it will take years to get over this dreadful act of terrorism , so now comes the anger .The hate anyone who makes comments about their political stance whether they agree or not .
The world changed after 9/11 ,it changed because America thought they were indestructible , and now they realise if they go round beating every one with a big stick some with relaiate , welcome to the real world , as the rest of us know it .
EDIT
Michael , some 30 odd millon people in your counyrt are below the food poverty line so dont start saying we are all jealous of your super wealthy way of life , because we are
not , you are disliked at the present because you all have this massive everyone hates us attitude , well just look at all the American answers on this site each day and your may be able to figure out why.
EDIT

Of course. The respect is lost. The problem for americans is that they do not know it because they only hear the US point of view on their own media. Those who travel outside the US realise what is happening in the rest of the world and what the world thinks of them. |

There are countries *involved* in the Iraq war where the population spews hatred at Americans supposedly over foreign policy, but you're blind, deaf and dumb if you don't see that it's blatant bigotry. Just like the shows you mentioned that they have, people wouldn't dare show that kind of bigotry about any other group of people.
Anti-Americanism has always been popular in the Commonwealths and Europe. I lived there before Bush and it was the same nonsense, but it's become a big trendy thing now to do it. It's ignorance, and it won't effect leaders that have to make tough choices about serious diplomacy.
NZ is so left they won't even allow our warships in their ports. They better hope they never need help from the Americans.
***And we'll have the perfect right to tell them to too bad if they ever need any help. That's was my point. Anti-Americans don't usually think Americans have the right to go right back in their face, for some reason. I think you must have been living in NZ a long time... |

I don't think the USA has lost respect over the war on terror, just the way the dumb *** President wen't about it. Aren't you glad Jan.20/09 is quickly approaching?? (Inauguration Day)
We in Canada have the utmost respect for the brave men and women serving in the US Armed forces, it is the Commander in Chief of them that hasn't got a lot of respect, except from his aS$ kissing political friends around the globe.
I pray every day that another US or Allied troop doesn't give up their life, we have been hit hard lately in Kandahar, more Canadians lost their life today, but they died doing what it right!! Fighting for freedom and security for other nations in the world that can't stand up and doing it for themselves. Unfortunately most of the Afghanistan casualties this week in the CDN forces have come from a base CFB SHILO which is in close proximity to where I live so that news always stirs feelings of discontent amoungst the people of Canada. When somebody tells me, "Oh it's Bushes War", I say BS. It is everybody's war to keep the crazies of the Taliban or Al-Queda to keep from pushing their beliefs and ideologies on the world. There was no justifiable excuse for 9-11, and there never will be. Terror has to be stopped dead cold in it's tracks!!
I'm a CDN , and shamefully one of only a few that fully supports our troops and the US troops, and the allied troops who are doing their jobs, to protect the freedoms that so many just take for granted!!
Okay, enough of my soap box.
Everybody pray for our "heroes" overseas that they return to their loving families and friends, and are shown with great respect the honor that is to be shown them.
God Bless America, and the countries of the "civilized world"!!! |

Yes. The world has taken a negative view of America because of the Iraq war and because of our stupid election. President Bush has single handed (ok, with the aid of Cheney) made the USA a mockery. |

at 1st whatever americans did to iraq is right....they helped the people over there from the hands of bad people....but after that they should have left that place, once the war was over but they didn't now that was not fair...they made the world to think that they are going to take over iraq. |

I think the more intelligent people out there are capable of making the distinction between actions of the the American people and the actions of their imbecile of a president. Anyone who is disrespectful to you simply for being American is an idiot who isn't worth speaking to. I've travelled all around the USA on many occasions and always found the people to be extremely open and friendly, though very lacking in knowledge of the world beyond their shores.
To thug nasty I would say; tell your rhetoric about America The Good to the good people of Iran, Iraq (yes, the US government helped Saddam into power in the first place, then sold him chemical weapons to blitz the Iranians with), El Salvador, Chile, Nicaragua, Haiti, Laos, Cambodia, Greece, Guatemala, Cuba, Venezuela, Surinam, Bolivia, Indonesia etc, who have all had to endure a "regime change" courtesy of the USA simply because their government was not pro US-interests. Then try & tell them the USA is a force for Good.
Oh, and I worked as a construction surveyor in Iraq in the 90's, and I am telling you straight that women and kids were certainly not being raped & killed "en masse"....but they certainly are now. Well done.
Edit; wow, so many thumbs down. Guess the truth hurts. |

You just need to look at the number of allies who fought and are still fighting for the USA in afghanistan. Now look at the same allies and see if they helped the USA in Iraq. Many of them didn't agree with that war and didn't fight with the USA in Iraq. When your long time allies who are considered friends do not back you up and support / help you when you are fighting a war, it means that something is wrong there. The US did lose respect from many countries. And as long as there is a warmonger president in the white house who threatens to go to war with other countries left and right - let's just think about Iran and Russia - the world will keep losing respect for the US. |
