In a conventional war, China is really our only opposition. They would be a tough opponent simply due to their population, but their military power is increasing rapidly.
In unconventional warfare, there are a lot of countries that could challenge us. While we are still the most powerful nation on earth, as you were kind enough to repeat for us, we don't do war right. We are too concerned about not hurting people's feeling and making them feel "healthy" about themselves to go in, do the job, and get out.
In case you haven't been paying attention, we aren't winning in Iraq. We aren't losing, but we aren't winning either. The opposition in Iraq is poorly trained by our standards, and is killing more American soldiers than I would like to see us losing.
I guess the answer to your question is this: If the US unleashes everything we have, no, there is not a nation on earth (currently, but China isn't far off) that could stand against us. If we continue to participate in touchy-feely warfare, any third world country can hold its own against us. |

Yes, the US. We are the most powerful nation, true. But we can crumble from within very easily. |

I don't think we are as secure as we would like to think. I feel like there are other countries that are just as powerful as we are if not more and because we close our eyes to that fact, we are putting ourselves in danger. As for you calling others "dumbos", that is what takes away just a little more of our so called "super power". Comments like that show ignorance and ignorance shows others weakness. I am a proud American and I support all the troops, but I don't think we as a Nation are as powerful as you think. You have to take into account that we can't even get along amongst ourselves. This Country is falling apart from the inside out and I really hope people can see between the lines. |

I have much pride in my country and in the force I fight for. We will never be defeated although if god forbid Israel wanted to turn on us and go for an all out war we would have one hell of a fight on our hands. We are matched dead equal with them in technology, and they out number our military force however our navy is stronger yet their ground troops are better due to the fact that they have better tanks (merkava) and every one is required to do at least one term military service they even have fanatical women in combat. It all depends on who's ground we are fighting on. We would win but after one hell of a run for our money.........Shadow Stalker |

The times they are a changin'. I don't think that just any country can but I think that if some banded together they could.I think that the US military and government have more balls and follow though on their actions (and the weapons/means to do so) but I also think that other countries think before they act which is always a good idea. And very well could (I hope) bring down the facade that the US is sooooo powerful. The other thing is that even US citizens are not in favor of governmental decisions so we could have an uprising from ourselves with the support of other countries. In that case yes another country could defeat us. (especially if we keep letting dummies run for office) |

No single country on Earth could take down the U.S. However if a few big ones ganged up on us, maybe. But not before we nuke thiers!!!!!!
The U.S. currently has enough firepower in its arsenal to destroy the planet 100 times over. |

US - 12,5 Trillion GDP in 2005
EU - 13,5 Trillion GDP in 2005
China - projected to bypass the USA in GDP in 2028.
Look at history - There have been nations much more powerful at their time then the USA has ever been. The Persians, the Egyptians, the Romans, The Vatican, The Mongolians, The Brits, The Mayans and many more. Where are they now? Sunk into Oblivion by their own weight and arrogance. Same as General Motors and Ford, who owned the Car market and can now be bought by any mid size Chinese Company, if they wanted. An empire is finished, when the gluttony and arrogance bypasses reality. It will go slow, from within. Maybe 25 years or less. |

I'm sure the US won't be the most powerful too much longer. China is growing very fast, and I'm sure they will be the leader in the near future. By posting this question your just pissing off people from other countries. No wonder other countries hate the US. It's because of people like you, and people like bush. |

In normal warfare, where the lines are clearly drawn in the sand, No way! Only If several of our allies turn against us. And heaven forbid anyone try to outright invade us. those of us who believe in the second amendment will be here along with the guard and every other patriotic militia in this country.
The way battles are being waged now in Iraq and Afghanistan are killing us, they are not wars. They are skirmish battles fought between the U.S. and Islamic radicals. We already defeated Iraq. It didn't take us long at all to win. Now we have to clean out all the troublemakers so they can sustain some form of government and take back control over their country.
We were never at war with Afghanistan. It just happened to be the place where the Taliban decided to station themselves.
Our biggest problem is we can not wage war like we used to. There are no trenches or front lines. We can't even tell who is our enemy until they start shooting at us or blow themselves up to kill us. The fact that we can not clearly distinguish combatants is whats giving us a hard time over there. And the fact that the military can't do this the way they want to or are trained to because of the political bureaucrats in D.C. wont let them. If they wanted this thing to be done and over with they would kindly step out of our troops way and let them do they're jobs. |

You are delusional. No country, especially the U.S.. is as good as they proport to be. How can such a great country, with all it's capablilities and might, not be able to prevent 911, especially when they had the info to do so, but because of interagency rivalry, the act of terrorism happened? |

Well, so far this century, the US has disastrously lost military actions in Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Cuba and Lebanon, and it looks like it's going to lose again in Afghanistan and Iraq. It has also been losing the war on drugs for 20 years in the Caribbean and South America.
So the evidence suggests that, yes, the USA can be defeated, as long as it keeps embarking on ill-planned sledgehammer actions in terrains it doesn't understand against guerrilla forces it refuses to learn about.
Having big, powerful armed forces is only part of the winning equation. The US has a strong army but a hopeless strategy division. |

Your question seemed reasonable and intelligent, but your comment does not help your reputation as an American.
Although I admire America and Americans for many achievements, this sort of arrogance and superiority makes me puke.
What do you think you are to put yourself on a pedestal and by doing so, humiliating all other nations? What are we? Dog-food?
And YOU call OTHERS "dumbos".
I would tell you what you are if I would not be gentleman enough to keep dirty words for myself.
Hope you will do your patriotic duty and go to Irak, and get killed. |

We were the most powerful but as long as the government keeps letting the other countries come over here and buy up our busines and and jobs we wilbe in very bsd shape. we are losing our power every day. Our beatiful country is going to hell and the government is letting it happen. |

We got nukes, so we couldn't really "lose" just tie, a tie in which both sides are annihilated.
However if you want an example of the modern American millitary getting its butt-kicked, look no further than Afganistan, we have yet to stamp the Taliban out of existence, and now they are making a resurgence. We will leave that nation defeated, because some people wanted to chase no-bid contracts in Iraq. |

WERE ONLY ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL NATIONS ON EARTH. THERE ARE SEVEN KNOWN COUNTRIES WITH NUKES LIKE US.
CHINA HAS ALREADY BEAT US ECONOMICALLY, AND SOON WILL PASS US IN WEALTH, IN THE YEAR 2020, SAW THAT ON 60 MINUTES.
OH AND WE'VE ONLY BEEN A SUPER POWER SINCE WAR WORLD 2. BEFORE US IT WAS THE BRITISH. NO SUPER POWER LASTS FOR VERY LONG, IT'S OUR TURN TO TURN OVER THE CROWN.
OUR GOVERNMENT WANTS US TO THINK WE ARE THE ONLY SUPER POWER IN THE WORLD, BUT IT'S JUST NOT TRUE. WHEN WE INVADED IRAQ FOR EXAMPLE, WE WERE PLANNING TO FLY OVER FRANCES AIR SPACE AND THEY REFUSED US THE RIGHT TO DO SO. SO WE HAD TO FLY AROUND THEM. WHY????? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NUKES, AND WE OBEYED..... SOME SUPER POWER ................................... |
