I don't think they are more or less disciplined, I think its just a different kind of discipline.

It just depends on the individual.

I know that many in the military today have an inflated opinion of themselves.

I would not say that is really a fair comparison. I would say that the recourse on what happens to someone in their own jobs is what makes up discipline. I will give you an example. I am a forward air controller and I must give a coordinates on a target, I can either be just so so on my coordinates that I give or I must be very disciplined and make sure I am precise and exact or others are going to die. Now in the civilian world you give some one a coordinate and directions for some where to go and they are late for a meeting, so what! So you see the reciprocation's are completely different as to what the objectives are!

No. Discipline is derived from home. Not from army or civilian life. Not even from school. Discipline is inbred from infancy. A tenure in the army only polishes it further. Civilian life in a good company polishes it also. But discipline is inherent in the character in the upringing of the individual. The Army demands it, various other organizations demand it. But finally looking at it discipline begins at home and will continue with you for the rest of your life. If you had a disciplined upbringing, going later into a regulated way of life will be very easy, no need to fret and worry but otherwise your life is a constant struggle between your easy you and discipline which is the largest factor for life on earth to continue with ease and constancy.

It depends on the individual. There are certainly things you can't get away with in the military that would slide by much easier or even unnoticed in the civilian world. But that doesn't mean everyone in the military is responsible, just like not every civilian is irresponsible.

I have noticed that I find more heinously bratty children in the military environment (on post, etc.) than in the civilian sector. Seems ironic.

It really depends on the individual.

But if I were to give an answer:

Civilians are more disciplined in life because they are not required to show up to work everyday. They could easily stay in bed all day and sleep but they decide to drag their butt out of bed in the morning.

Military men pretty much have to show up at work or they get in trouble. So it is not a matter of being disciplined, it is a matter of making sure that they don't get into trouble.

Both civilians and military men have the same issues in real life. Both can't pay their credit card bills on time, both have moral issues, I mean the list could go on and on.

My Opinion...You Asked
NO, I think it depends on the individual. Just because one is in the military doesn't make he / she more disciplined. There are many slackers in the military. (I would like to name a few of them.) Age, Rank, Job Title or Gender has nothing to do with being discipline. It's all depends on the individual!

aaa
I dont think so.They too have their own disciplines.

I wouldnt say as much less disciplined. As a general statement, obviously not a complete one, I believe civilians are not less disciplines as much as less motivated towards the whole. Just a thought. Being a civilian, it is not something you have to worry about if you dont go to work on time one day or dont listen to what your boss says. Not because they are less disciplined, but because they are living for the most part by a different set of standards/rules. As a civilian you are more concerned about yourself as well as those that you care about. As such if it doesnt effect them its not a big worry for you. In the military you have to work by the broader view. If you show up late or unready for work, people may die. In the military it is harder to be more concerned about yourself. You are part of a team and as such are working for a higher goal. That is something you should hopefully learn and know within yourself early in your career. The mission is higher than any one of us. I think that is was truly seperates a civilian from an military member. In the military you are living and doing your job day in and day out so that others dont have to and that they along with yourself can live free. Where as civilians are not required to feel that way.

Yes

If you take the proportion of disciplined to non disciplined the proportion of disciplined will be very high by whatever norms

Armed forces are not born from heaven, they too come from the same civilians whom we call .....on the latter part.
Let it be any proffession there has to be discipline, its the blood of organisation. Even in the armed forces we find the cheats, murderer, womaniser and rapeist and other forms of criminals. Thing is that their news is hidden as the cases are taken by military court.
A person learns and develops his/her own set of disciplin and conduct so is it in defence. .

civilians do not know the meaning of discipline.

tcbtoday123
Of course they are. The military teaches discipline, responsibility, etc,, which, I daresay, most of the civilians could use a good healthy does of in this country!

if i were to choose one disciplined person randomly out of either 100000 military men/women OR out of 100000 non-military men/women -- i'd ofcourse take the former option. in general i've known them to more desciplined. exceptions remain .. :)
