Do you think that women could ever fight in a war?

I once heard that there was political talk of a "female draft" during a time of war. What do you all think about women fighting out in the field? Do you think they'd survive it?

Ok... realistically. Not driving a vehicle: people we are talking all out combat. No women cannot hang, and even if they could they cause to much of a distraction, Atleast in our army. The united states has a strong value of women and kids, it's how the majority of us have been raised. To have women in danger fighting beside you would feel the need to protect her over any of your battle buddies. I know I've been involved in a few good complex attacks in Iraq. Infact I'm still serving in Iraq now, I have seen more females freeze up under the detonation of ieds, an get scared in the midst of gunfire. I'm not saying that men don't but I have never witnessed a female take charge, when engaging the enemy. I'm sorry I'f you feel differently but it's the cold hard truth. Another thing that irritates me about serving along side women, is that we have and every day job to do. Their is a female sergeant in my unit, and every day she ask's a male to pull the king pin' (which releases the trailer from the truck). I mean she can't even pully back 40 lbs of pressure, and it is constantly like this day to day with other females soldiers. I am tired of pulling their dead weight. If you are a GI Jane, Please enlist in the service, proove to us men their are women out there that can do the basic fundamentals to their job

Some of the best soldiers I had the privilege of fighting alongside were women. It is an honor and in my personal perspective, an obligation for all Americans to serve at one point or another in service to thier country. I don't vote because it was given to me, I earned that right.

Women in Israel do 2 years compulsory military service. They learn how to fire a gun, self defense, maintain equipment and provide support etc. However, I was told they are never put on the front line as their male colleagues tended to take unnecessarily risks to prevent them being taken prisoner and being tortured. To win a war soldiers need to take risks.

i have no problem with women fighting for their country but soliders and marines have to be physically and mentally prepared. in a combat situation you might have to carry a 200 pound man waering full gear on top of the gear you are wearing. there will also be situations were you will need to employ hand to hand combat skills. it is easily for someone to kill another person from a distance with a rifle, but will that same person be able kill up close and personal using a knife our your own hands. i believe that women are not as capable as men are in combat roles. Defending the country is a voulentary choice but the country needs the best and most able bodied fighters to do it. I dont believe that women fit into this category.

Women have been fighting in wars for centuries. Just because the U.S. didn't allow it doesn't mean the women haven't fought.
They fought beside their men during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and every other war, or battle, here on our soil.
The difference is that when it comes to sending soldiers overseas, this country prefers to send men. That, however, is changing due to the fighting of so many women who wanted the right to defend their country.
We have women in Iraq right now. We don't need a draft. The women are joining voluntarily.
So, YES, I think that women COULD and WOULD survive battle. We already have done it. We have done what we had to to survive for centuries, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Go to thomas.loc.gov and look for national service act. they want to draft men and women.

yzyz, women will do just as well as men. they'll be brainwashed just the same.

Women already fight in wars they are over in Iraq fight now. Not because you are a women doesn't mean anything, It doesn't even matter if you have children. I know a family that both parents where in the army and both parents, at the same time, got deployed to Iraq. The children stayed with grandma and grandpa. So yes I do think that if we ever have a another draft they will be drafted as well.

SolMan
of course they would. There is no reason that women can't physically and emotionally handle the same combat situations as their male counterparts!

lol i'm sure they'd make good decoys.

but in all seriousness, a female draft would be unrealistic, as a majority of women are not in the physical condition to fight as soldiers. they would be risking unnecessary lives.

Draft men first and women second. I heard some disturbing stories about women in the Iraq War. I have a friend who worked in one of the triage centers at the front lines of the invasion, she said lots of soldiers got lost in the desert, one specifically she saw was a woman who got lost and captured by the Iraqis. She had been beaten, raped, cut, broken legs and arms, and sodomized with a broom. she was found tie up and unconcious in a shed by marines.
If a draft requires the service of women then our country better be repelling an invasion not launching one.

I can only repeat what others have said, women do fight in wars. Nothing new there. As a matter of fact, women are very good warrors.

Sure, they can go ahead and have a draft for women, all I want to know is while were in Iraq.... who the hell is going to be taking me to go get my hair and nails done and who's going to drive me over to one of those malls out there so I can go shopping?? I'm not fighting without the things I'm accustomed to. If they can assure me those things, I'll be the first in line to hit the battle field.

Well, 58 women died in Iraq as US Military. They may not have been in a line unit, but they are just as dead!

I don't want to see women die. Personally it offends me!

Women could probably handle stress longer than men, but physically they are not equal. That is genetic, not an anti-female remark!

I guess some have, though some of the sources used below was Joan of Arc and Athena!

If they want to fine, but I still hate to see a dead female!

I know some are in combat roles like fighter and helicopter pilots, but there are no grunts, are there?

Women can fight in wars. Women HAVE fought in wars. And women will CONTINUE to fight in wars. They do rather well at it when given the chance.

There are plenty of females that are fighting in Iraq right now. They survive it just like their male counterparts do. The wars that are being fought now don't have safe rear areas like wars in the past. Some of the biggest dangers involve driving in convoys (IEDs) and there are plenty of females that do that. Do not confuse "not being allowed in combat arms (infantry, armor)" with not being in combat.

cindy s
Yes i do believe that volunteer women could fight. Women that do not want to go can easily get out of a draft. But women can fight the same as men if they set their minds to it. Women are strong and the backbone of our country.

They already are. Women can do anything if they have the strength and stamina to do it. I have seen women with more strength and muscle than some men who have gone to the frontlines. It would be a difficult thing to have a 'female draft' since the majority of females don't fit that category (muscle, strenght, stamina and determination). It is just not how most women are naturally built. The ones who DO go to war have as much a chance of surviving as anyone else. Being killed or not has nothing to do with gender.

Bill H
That would depend on how the war is fought. Hand to hand... no. otherwise a resounding yes.
