Do you think the Military draft is fair?
|
I heared that it you get drafted into the army, you have to do it. Is that American? In the Bill of Rights, we have the Freedom of Speech. So why can't we say no? I know it's the mititary, but they are fighting for America are they not? Additional Details 1. I know ther isn't a draft right now, dumb *****.
2. I wouldn't do well in the military because of my severe anger issues.

I know the draft isin't in affect, and this kid didn't say it is either, so y'all need to stop trippen. It's ALWAYS a possibility.
As for your question, do I think it's fair? In all honesty I do think it's fair. Contrary to popular belief, "Freedom" isin't free. Someone has to pay for it, and I think Every Able American Citizen should partake in the earning of such.
Now, Personally.. I would NOT want them to bring back the draft for the simple fact that Most people would NOT want to be there. If I'm at war fighting for my life, the LAST thing i'd want to do is be next to someone who didn't want to be there. You need to be of sound body and mind when at war and if you can't trust the people covering your six, ALL is lost. period. |

I believe that Every American after high school should serve this country in some branch of "service". Weather it be Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Coast Guard, Ameri-corp or Peace-corp. And for this service they should receive Free Education (as high as they want too go) and Free Health Care (Just like 1 term congresspeople get) |

Many nations around the world have mandatory tours in their armed forces. And that 's precisely why the are all remedial. Give me an all volunteer force any day. |

It can't be unfair, because it doesn't exist. When it did, you had the right to say "no," but it didn't stop you from going to jail if you backed your words with action (or rather inaction). And while we're on the subject of free speech, one free speech device on this site is spell-check. |

We have not had a draft since 1973! All personnel in the armed forces of the United States are volunteers. So, your question has no relevance. |

It's simple, there is no draft.
Although liberals refuse to accept the fact, the US has an all volunteer force. |

If there were a draft, you could exercise your freedom of speech and say no, but you would have to go ahead and respond positively if you didn't want to go to jail. Don't worry, based on the nature of your question and your thought processes, I'm pretty sure your ASVAB score will help you stay out of the military. You might be able to join the Army though... |

I grew up in a different time and place. I spent from 1978-1980 serving in the Czech Army, basically the same as the US's National Guard. After coming to America, I spent 4 years in the NY National Guard as well.
I had a choice in the USA. I didn't in Czechoslovakia. You might be able to delay service for a year, but you would have to do it at some point.
I have no regrets for either period of service in my life. In Czechoslovakia, we were told 1 million Warsaw Pact troops could one day invade the West. We were also told one day we could be invaded by 750,000 Western troops. If you look at a map, you'll see Czechoslovakia pushes into Germany. Obviously we'd be right in the middle of WW3. We trained to supply professional front line troops. We trained to aid civilians escape fighting. We knew if something happened, it was going to be horrible no matter who started it.
It was similar in the National Guard, but more on the emphasis of defending Americans and helping Americans. For most people, the desire to help neighbors is instinctive. It was for me. It was never my desire to attack, but always my desire to defend, help and protect. I'm sorry if you don't have those feelings. I don't like the present war, but I fully understand why some serve. I'm sure they don't like going to war either, but they are proud to help our country at least. |

it is fair and in time of need it is a must---according to your way of thinking a person could drive up to a stop sign and say no and just keep on going--or at tax time you could say no and not pay your tax |

The draft ended in the 70's with Viet Nam. |

Of course it's fair, that's why it's called a draft. |

Yes the draft is very American and if you are called you must serve. Most countries have a constitutional or legal basis for conscription. These provisions are in place to support the build up of forces in a time of war. As the US is adequately replenishing its forces, there is currently no draft; however, every male must sign up for selective service.
Unfortunately rules and exceptions during the Vietnam era gave the draft a bad name. WWII also had a draft which was much more popular and enthusiastically supported. |

Who ever guaranteed "fairness"????
Lots of things in life aren't fair... but they many are still necessary. If the draft is reinstated, it would only be because there was no other option. Fairness isn't even part of the equation. |

If the draft was ever used it would be basically world war 3 so you dont really have to worry and in the case that the draft was used it would be because they would need the numbers to win....and if they didnt win free speech wouldnt really be an option under whoever won....so its kind of a safety net in case of a massive war |

Yes I do think its fair. You get the luxury of living in a "free" country. Thousands of men and women have risked their lives to keep it that way for you. The least you could do, if it came down to it, is to repay the favour. And I am sure if a draft was reinstated alot of people would hide out because they are chicken shits and dont think that they should fight for their government but when it comes to it you are fighting to save your country ... so yes a draft would be fair, if you want to live here, you can help protect it. If not .. get the hell out .. we dont need you anyways. |

As it was conducted in the past, no, the draft wasn't fair. That's because those from wealthier backgrounds could take advantage of loopholes and get themselves assigned to cushy National Guard units or find other ways to do their military service without being put into combat situations or ever leaving the country. |

Wow the 1st ammendment has nothing to do with this. If your country calls on you, you server. Period. Speaking is different than doing. And you'd have to be a coward not to serve. |

I think the draft should be abolished. Forever.
