Do you think the USA will put the draft back into affect because of the war?

Let's see...how many of you girls support the war in Iraq? And how many of you are willing to fight it?

Republican Mom, Paul McD, and others: Check your figures. Recruiting is NOT keeping up with the need for combat forces. Why do you think high school diplomas are no longer required, and criminal records are being waived? Sarolite, how callous and snug of you to assure us that no one will be drafted as long as the men and women serving their second and third and fourth tours in a combat zone can have those tours extended.

Sureno, thanks for pointing out that the draftees a few answerers were so quick to sneer at would be a welcome relief to tired men and women serving in what looks like an endless war.

If Bush had properly estimated the size of the force that would be required to stabilize the country before he launched this farce, he'd have requested a draft at the outset...which would have killed his proposition before it ever got started.

We don't have a draft because the Vietnam War was almost as big a fiasco as this one, and, before it was over, had rendered military and naval service very unpopular. Sadly, the men who served in Vietnam were shamefully unpopular, too, when they returned to a country full of protestors and draft dodgers who snubbed them and jeered at them. Aside from the questionabie merits of that war, the rank inequities in the Selective Service System, which exempted college students but drafted an excessively high percentage of young black Americans, gave the draft a very bad name.

We're wearing out our armed forces personnel, folks. The standing military and navy had been reduced to nearly inadequate size before Bush's Folly was launched, and, without a draft, the forced extension of active duty enlistments and commissions and the activation of Reserve and National Guard Units have placed unimaginable strains on the physical and mental endurance of our servicemen and servicewomen and their families.

If you still support this war, join the armed forces, and give they guys who've been taking the heat for you a break. If you're not willing to do that, and you won't support a draft, then start telling your congressmen and the president that it's time to wrap things up over there and bring our people home.

Meanwhile, the justifiable war against terrorism, which is taking place in Afghanistan, has been neglected, undermanned, and nearly forgotten. Anybody want to volunteer for that one?

I wish, then we could set up sniper outposts near the Canadian border and have an open hunting season on traitors and cowards, IE: liberals.

The dems will try and have talked about doing so just for the purpose of turning the public more against the war. It won't happen in this conflict.

The last thing I want is some weak willed piece of $h!t watching my back! Give me a bunch of good ol' boys and girls that volunteered to protect something greater than themselves and everything will be just fine. But put me in a platoon with people who had to be drafted and someone may fall victim to friendly fire.

On one hand it would be good. You'd have both chickenhawks and limp wristed coward liberals forced to serve something other than themselves for once. They'd learn discipline, honor, and respect.

However, having served for 6 years (99-05), believe me...the military from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs down the the lowest buck private does not want draftees serving alongside them.

We have an all volunteer military now and are proud of that. No reason to go back to the draft.

Nah. From what I can tell there's enough voluntary miltary participants to meet the demand. Maybe could use more recruits, but not to the "draft" level... and if so, we wouldn't daft to combat but would draft to support.

Don't worry the draft will never come back. America is proud to have a volunteer Army, anyway I think they'd ask the veterans to return first.

Not as long as they can keep extending tours of duty and reducing time at home between tours. They've extended to 15 months instead of 12 months recently.

No. They haven't done it yet and they won't. It hasn't been done in along time.

No.It will stay voluntary, which is a good thing, but it does seem to create a priveleged class of people who get all the benefits but dont have to do anything in return. If it ever would come to a draft, there are many who would just put down their double lattes, park the BMW in the garage and ask mommy to take them to Canada. Leave it up to the other people and then sit back and condemn everything they do.

I really don't think it will come to the that point anytime soon. The war (other than being unjustified and unprovoked) is not going well politically.

Also, don't forget that elections are coming up soon and nothing that stupid will be done until after we get someone else elected. Maybe this time they won't have to prove how big they are to the world. Even if it does cost the lives of innocent soliders.

I feel it should happend. We got guys and gals headed back to Iraq for there 2, 3 and 4th tour of duty!! With a draft, the government can send new troops in to give these troops a break.

If these perpetual republican wars continue on and on the time will come when any able-bodied person will be drafted to fight for the republicans.

It won't matter whether they are gay, straight, men, women, older, or yes, even children.

They will draft anyboy that is able-bodied, and some that aren't.
