If you were to convince any US Soldier that they should refuse a legal order to deploy to and fight in Iraq then I would say that at the minimum you should be charged with civil disobedience, and if it were my choice treason. And that's just because of all the other stupid questions you tend to ask.

when orders came down the last time for my husband, several people from the unit went AWOL, not suprising-had nothing to do with Iraq, just the thought of war itself.
If someone joins the military they should know what they're getting, a one-way trip to the sandbox.
Anyone who goes the mutiny route is a coward and is betraying a Brother in Arms and should be lined up on a fence and shot, like in the old times when they caught a deserter. The military in the US is 100% VOLUNTEER, to be mutinous is cowardly.

Listen, it's an all volunteer military. Anyone joining now knows there is a very good chance they will be sent to a hot zone. The understand this when they join and are okay with it. What you suggest is illegal and the soldiers could be prosecuted and sent away for a very long time for doing something so idiotic. You make me want to puke.

In military parlor Boss is always right. Their first priority is discipline. A soldier's immediate higher officer has to follow orders from his higher officer and so on. The source of the policy is decided democratically by politicians - whether right or wrong. One person's right may be other person's wrong and vice versa. If what you say is followed then there will be chaos in the long run and that is never ever desirable for a country like America.

you say it a illegal war but let look at something how many time did the Iraq break the UN resolution 17 times and how many months did our troops wait to attack Iraq ,,they had warning and did not take them ...just like Iran doing right now,,, and when we was starve their children what happen ,,,remember the food for oil program so they could have food ,,what was they doing sell oil to Germany ,France and Russia for weapon to kill our ppl.

because of the freedoms you are given, you can ask questions like that all you want to. but to encourage me and anyone else in uniform to lay down our weapons because we may not agree with what's going on. you'll have an easier time trying to convince congress to get rid of taxes all together.

as soldiers - it is our job to go where we are needed (regardless if we like it or not). and, despite what you may think, a good soldier is going to follow orders (so long as they're lawful). u can protest the war, the government, even the military but don't ask us to turn our backs on our duty (it's just not going to happen).

You cant "encourage" us. We have sworn an oath to obey the officers appointed over us. So as much as we might hate the war and disagree with it, we are bound to support the Constitution.

Oh and before a million people dog you for saying the war is "illegal" I must agree. But then again, I dont let society tell me what to think. I gain an opinion for myself based off of the facts.

Edit - to the below poster... seomone in SF would never refer to themselves as a "green beret". But if you are, and know the history of the beret, you should not be using it in that context. Dont "fake the funk"! Parachute at 50,00 feet? Dude do you even know what H.A.L.O. is?

well they are rebuilding the country, i don't think the war is illegal and I've seen it all on you-tube and articles i think it was a bad decision but I'm pretty sure if you wanted to you could say that a lot of wars are illegal if you put it like that

You are an idiot for even having the gall to ask a question of our military members. They are the best in the world and I am Proud to have served with many of them for 24 years before I retired. I served a short time in Vietnam and although I was against the conflict, I served and did my duty, the same as those who have served in IRAQ, Somalia, Afghanistan, and other areas they have been sent to. To ask any military member to refuse to fight is asking them to sentence themselves to a possible death sentence. The last I knew, it was against Military Regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice to mutiny or refuse to obey a Direct or Lawful Order from a Superior Officer, or in this case the Commander In Chief.
In case you are out of touch with reality, the punnishment for mutiny or desertion or refusing to fight in time of war is punnishable by death or such other punnishment as a courts-martial may direct.
Additionally, these members would bring disgrace upon their families who support them and are continuously praying for their safe return.
To the idiot who claims to be a "Green Beret" and parachute at 50,000 feet then be in country 2 - 4 years, good luck jumping an opening your chute at 50,000 feet. I flew enough in my time in service to know that commercial planes fly around 35,000 feet and are pressurized due to lack of oxygen at that level. If you attempt to open a door at that level, you will cause everyone to blackout or don oxygen. You would blackout before you had a chance to open your chute. Maybe you will serve a tour there. Forever, as when you hit, there won't be anything left to dig out of the hole you will make when you hit the ground, if you land on the ground and not in a mountain or somewhere else.

Like the other person said, you cannot "encourage" them to refuse. I do believe "cowardice" is punishable by death in time of war. I say cowardice because that is what it would be labeled.

NEVER!!! I'm in the U.S. Green Berets about to parachute into Afghanistan at 50,000 ft in the air. I will be there for 2-4 years most likely and i am glad to be here fighting. You should be ashamed of yourself!!!

Most of the previous answers/comments to this question is a sad indictment of this country and the majority of the people that make it up. The basic problem is that people do not want to admit it when they are wrong and will even support past seriously flawed decisions no matter the consequences. The war and present occupation is Illegal no matter if congress approved it or not because it was based on lies and purposely vast amounts of misleading information in order to have preemptive invasions of foreign countries that had no intent or ability to attack our country. The terrorists and/or whatever powerful hidden groups outside of or within our own country that were and are a danger to us must be brought to pay for their Crimes without committing more crimes to accomplish justice. Therefore since the war/occupations are illegal I find it necessary to inform soldiers that they must research the validity of the war and their sworn duty to only follow legal orders of their superiors. I do understand the difficulty that results for a soldier to decide to not follow an order that he believes is illegal. Do a search using the following terminology and see what happens on the web sites found both military and judicial MILITARY ORDERS TO OBEY OR NOT TO OBEY.
