See official military pay tables below
The military's highest ranking officer (Chairman JCS) will make base pay of $19,326.60 which comes to $231,912 in base pay. Plus, they have housing allowance (BAH) (may be as much as 2/3 of your actual take home pay), basic subsistence allowance (BAS), and a spending account.
If you stay in for 20 years, you are guaranteed to make at least O-4. Base pay for O-4 with 20 years in is $6,723.30, total of $80,679.60 a year. Don't forget your BAH and BAS, which (depending on your station's zip code for BAH) can get you anywhere from $100,000 to $120,000 total a year. You can do the math yourself.
A typical career progression for Navy officers is:
O-2 2 Years
O-3 4 Years
O-4 9 to 11 Years
O-5 15 to 17 Years
O-6 21 to 23 Years
O-7 --based entirely on promotion boards (i.e. your connections)
Oh, and don't forget that ONLY your base pay is taxable. All your allowances and bonuses are not taxed.
The money is definitely not bad. But there are many comparable private sector jobs that make much more. I'm an O-1 with almost 2 years in, and a Wal-Mart cashier makes more than I do.
* Side note, please don't call yourself an officer. You're not wearing bars yet. |

Glad you're interested in the Military, and, Air Force to be specific :). The goals you have are pretty big and you need big goals to go far in life. Just to start this for you, the base pay for an O-1 (Officer-1st rank) is: $2,655.30 per month.
Be sure to study hard on Math and Science for the ASVAB scores! The higher the score, the more jobs open to you.
Good luck! |
