of course as the 2nd lt. is an officer [ 01 ] and any enlisted person has to salute an officer. [ but the officer on the other hand should respect the sgt mgr as it may come back to haunt him/her. |

Yes he does. All officers technically outrank all enlisted. All enlisted salute all officers. But who do you think would provide better advice, a brand new 2LT who has 6 months of training or a SGM with 25 years of experience in the army? The result is while SGMs have to salue 2LTs 2LTs (should) treat SGMs with the utmost respect and listen to their advice. |

All commissioned officer ranks outrank any enlisted servicemember.
And yes, Sergeant Majors must salute 2LTs. I guarantee if the 2LT gets out of line however, the Sergeant Major will either set that 2LT in his place quick, or he will let his boss (a Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Major General, etc) do it for him with great anger and much ugliness. Seen it happen.
For the record, most 2LTs I have met are great people, very respectful, very intelligent, very willing to learn on the job. I have met few exceptions.
You do what your rank can afford. |

Yes. A 2nd Lt is an Officer and a Sgt. Major is a Non-commissioned Officer. All officers are above enlisted. The Sgt. Major is supposed to salute the 2nd LT. |

Legally yes a 2Lt right out of OCS outranks a CSM.
Realistically, no they don't.
Your not going to find many Lt's, Capt's or Major's trying to order a Sgt Maj or a CSM around.
In the Navy, Chief Petty Officers are actually charged with the training of Jr. Officers.
But, yes, you will always see a 30 year Sgt. Maj happily saluting a brand new 2 Lt. |

Yes.... but it would not be in the shave tail's best interest to cross a Sgt Major. |

Yes. 2nd Lt. is a commissioned officer. Sgt. major in a non-commissioned officer. |

2nd lt is an officer ranking, its the first officer rank acually. SGTMAJ is the final rank for enlist. Enlist and officer are completely different worlds
Officer always out ranks enlisted dispite experience and age.

Technically, yes. Any officer outranks an NCO.
But in reality, the Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps will never have to answer to an LT outside of a few formalities. |

Only in his own head does a 2nd Lt outrank a Sgt Major. A good, smart 2nd Lt will watch and listen to all his senior NCO's like his life depends on it, because it does. |

All enlisted personnel (Sgts Major, SGTs, etc.) have to salute all officers, regardless of time in service. Don't ask me why, it's just one of those things. Even if a SGM is 39 years old and a 2LT just got out of OCS and is 21... the SGM still has to salute him. It's not rank, it's more respect... and I believe a 2LT makes more money than a SGM, which isn't fair at all. |

Y E S, A 2nd Lt is a commissioned officer where
a Sgt Major is a Non-commissioned Officer or better known as Enlisted. All enlisted personnel salutes officers who have graduated from OCS!!! |

yes all officers are above all enlisted men ( that goes for Warrant officers also.) and must be given the same respect as any other officer. It does not matter if the Sargent Major has 25 years in service and the 2nd Lt. is just out of college he must be given the respect of an officer. |

A 2LT is an Officer but if he's smart he will never challenge or give an order to a CSM if he/she knows what good for them. |

Yes, a 2LT outranks a Sergeant Major.
All Officer grades are above all enlisted grades.
Yes, the Sergeant Major must salute the 2LT straight out of OCS. |

from rabidliberal, posted earlier:
" All branches of the US military (except the Air Force) are required to salute any higher ranking officers."
Riggggghhhhht. Cause that makes total sense....Lame.
Anyways, one other little known fact about saluting and the Medal of Honor: The Medal of Honor confers special privileges on its recipients, both by tradition and by law. By tradition, all other soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen—even higher-ranking officers up to the President of the United States—initiate the salute. |

yes a 2nd Lt is and officer officers out rank any type of NCO. Nco's and regular soldiers have to salute any type of officer. Officers are normally a soldier that has some kind of college, extra training/ schooling. A regular soldier has no experience no college(lil to non) and no extra training. Every soldier no matter rank has to salute officers |

All branches of the US military (except the Air Force) are required to salute any higher ranking officers. All NCO's, including Sergeant Majors, are required to salute any officer. However, all the officers I have known, including 2nd Lts, have respect for all E-9's, because of what it takes to get there. |

Yes, a second Lt outranks ALL enlisted and warrant officers. Very few officers(of any rank)are going to lean on them though. Their job is to guide the young officers and they have no problem saluting or obeying orders. You don't get to E-9 by being stupid and a lot of those guys have the same education an officer does, but choose to be/stay enlisted. The E-9's that work at fleet /division level always work for a general/admiral officer. So basically some 2 Lt would be challenging a senior officers point man. |
