Does a Military background disqualify you from participating in MSF (Doctors without borders)?

As a doctor in the US military I have heard that after I retire I would not be eligible to volunteer with Medicines Sans Frontieres (Doctors without borders). Their site does not indicate anything to this effect, is prior military service it an unpublished disqualifier?

I don't know of any policy per say for Doctors without Borders but I do know that they and some of the other programs like Wings of Hope have had to become more careful on who they send where because of their background and previous association with the military. I have a friend that is quite active in one of them that is also in the Reserves and he and they exercise some prudence and forethought as to where they ask him to fly to and for what. There have been some problems as a result of this in the past and none of these agencies want to put people at risk while at the same time maintain an identity that is far removed from government and military influences and involvement of any kind.

Go for it, my optometrist has volunteered overseas for years - - and was in the Navy -- for the life of me I can not remember what organization he did it with!

I'm sure they would accept you with open arms - why don't you give them a call instead of asking a bunch of strangers - most of whom may never have heard of the organization.

I see nothing about prior military being excluded from joining on their requirements page. However, they are not hiring a lot of "less than full doctor" occupations, like massage or occupational terapists, EMTs, acupuncturists, and chiropractors.

I doubt that it would disqualify you but . . . there maybe some places, MSF won't want to take you.

I don't think it outright disqualifies you, but it may limit what countries you can go to. I have heard of things where charities limit you going to countries you deployed in as a service member.
