Does anyone still believe in the war in Iraq, or that it has a purpose?

I believe that the main reasons for the us invasion in Iraq were to gain control of Iraq's oilfields, to establish military basis in Iraq, and to pretty much dominate the Middle east by taking control of the oil and establishing control on countries that are oil dependent but I ask this question because I'm still unsure about the opinions on the war, no one here seems to want to discuss so hey, get at it

First off, obviously some of you didn't read my part thoroughly, I gave you MY opinion and I was asking for yours, you didn't need add that you're questioning my level of intelligence simply because what I believe.. and to you I'd say the same.. to think innocent lives being taken away is considered "stablizing" a country

I personally like to believe that if in any of my three tours to Iraq if I helped just one person taste the freedoms I have enjoyed my entire life, then it had its purpose. I can't say that oil did not have anything to do with it because I don't know. If you read any of your other answers, you already know we get most of our oil from Canada, but that is the here and now. Who knows what they were looking for in the future? I don't care about that. I feel good for having been there, and I feel good about the men and women that were there with me. I still think that I was sent there for a purpose. And I make no apologies for it, nor ask not for acceptance or approval. I think we did the right thing.

You do not have to believe in it. Just believe in the men and women over there willing to take a bullet so you can sleep peacefully at night. Then question the very nation that allows you to speak freely.
If you can read this....thank a teacher. If you read it in English.....Thank a VET!

If we wanted control over the oil fields, we would not be setting up a new government there, instead we would set Iraq as a territory for us. we already have Israel as a our stronghold in the middle east so there is no need for Iraq. It was a war we entered with the best intention of securing ourselves from the threat of Nuclear weapons, problem being that we had very incorrect intelligence information. The CIA, FBI, Pentagon, and our central intelligence agency all said there were weapons of mass destruction there. As much as Bush is hated, anyone who sees the information has to admit that it was these agencies fault for giving the wrong information to his administration, we need to get out of there asap, but in a responsible fashion.

i believe there were different reasons. oilfields being among them. however, without US presence in iraq, sadaam hussein would still be alive and wreaking havoc. theres a big difference between muslims and muslim extremists. we took control away from the extremists, and are now returning control over to the muslims. afghanistan is where we really need to be now, but we cant pull troops out of iraq until were truely done there, and thats not anytime in the near future. if we pulled out now and focused all on afghanistan then all the sacrifices made the last how ever many years in iraq would be for not. they would create a strong hold in iraq once again, and we would have to go right back in with an even larger force then before and now.

sorry
but if you believe it was all for oil
i question your level of education
canada is america's largest oil supplyer. canada has the largest tar sands for synthetic oil and also has 1/4 of the worlds untouched oil that has just been found. canada has more oil than iraq, if america wanted oil mainly they would invade canada. heck they would invade nigeria before iraq for that very purpose

the iraq war was to get an evil dictator out of power, we did that
now we're stabilizing the country or trying to

Obama does he is sending more troops and spending more money.

The USA does not control, or has ever taken one drop of Iraq oil.

Of course giving control of a country back to the people instead of terrorists and a ruthless dictator, is no where to be found in the liberal hand-book. Then there is the women's rights deal, GW Bush has done more for the rights of Iraq women then any president in history. But that will not be found in the liberal handbook either.

If you believe that the main purpose of the Iraq war was to gain control of Iraq's oil fields, then why does Iraq still control them and we don't dear ? Iraq is running surpluses from their oil revenue in the billions of dollars,we don't get a dime of that money. Don't listen to liberal idiots and think for yourself. And yes I do believe the Iraq war had a good purpose. 50 million Iraqi's are now free from dictatorial rule. God bless.

I think you are wrong in saying we wanted control of Iraq's oil and wanted military bases to control the area. My opinion only - you may very well be right but I do not think so.

Originally I was not against the action in Iraq but I was not thrilled at the prospect of starting the action either. At the time, the reasoning seemed sound - talk of WMD's, support and training of terrorists, etc. As the facts continued to come to light, after the deed was done as it were, it was revealed that the sources used for much of the information were very unreliable. Many of the citizens leaving Iraq and providing information lied. So as it turns out, the decision Bush made was based on unreliable intelligence and mis-interpretation of information within the intelligence analysis sections of various agencies.

Now I think that we cannot give up, basically because we helped cause the whole situation. Since the original purpose was flawed, the only purpose we have now is to try to leave Iraq as a stable, unified nation. That may be too much to expect since they do not seem to be able to address their religious and ethnic differences.

Hopefully, it will all work out.

Personally, I truly believe the only way to stabilize this country is to wipe every arab in it off the face of this planet. This is just my opinion. We are trained to help the people here with infrastructure, train their military and police forces, and help them in any way possible. It's turned into a humanitarian cause for the U.S. Army in my opinion. It's the reason I'm not re-enlisting and doing something else with my life. The purpose it has, in my opinion, is to give the Iraqi people a much better life than what they had before. If you think Saddam Hussein did a better job than we did, you need to do your research and see what percentage of people had it good while Saddam was in power. I, however, hate these people and would be ecstatic if the country was turned into glass. I joined the Army because I thought all I would do is fight, destroy, and leave, but instead we fight, stabilize, and rebuild.

If your supposition is correct.....

Why did the Allied Forces turn over the control of the Iraqi Oilfields to the UN?.....Why does ALL of the profits from Iraqi oil go to the Iraqi government?......Why do we not get any oil from these Iraqi oilfields? ...... If American wants to eventually control the Iraqi oilfields why did they turn over the decision power on who will run those oilfields in the future to the Iraqi government?

The goal of American forces is to have Iraqi forces securing and controlling their own country...... it would be counter productive to keep military bases in Iraq.....EVEN if they would let us..... you see, just like the Philippines....the Iraqi government can kick us out anytime they want......and we have NOTHING we can do about it

As to innocent lives taken away.....while it is true that innocent lives are lost in any war.....America goes to geat lengths NOT to take innocent lives.....we not only spend millions on weapons that are surgically precise, designed to kill only the target.....we have officers and NCO's on all military staffs whose sole job is to prevent the loss of innocent lives....prevent the loss of important infrastructure and national treasures.....we have entire military units whose job it is to protect innocent lives and property..... AND we have strick rules of evgagement (ROE) that put our soldier's very lives in danger rather than kill innocent people....
Compare that to the bad guy.....who will stop a bus full of innocent civilians......unarmed civilians......then kill them.....50 of them in one incident..... the high number of innocent civilians killed in Iraq has more to do with terrorists.....than American troops

As to the purpose of the war.....initially we had to stop "terrorism and the people who support terrorism".....Saddam was the world's BIGGEST supporter of terrorism..... and there were a long list of supporting reasons for the war.....and we accomplished that.....terrorism was stopped in it's tracks.....not ONE terrorist attack against America in 7 years.....and Saddam is dead
Why did we stay.....to put in a pro-west government between Iran and Israel.....to prevent an even more horrific war in the Middle East

Not questioning your intellect......just your illogical bias.....

STEVEN J..... Not even President Bush claimed Iraq had anything to do with 911..... and the war with Iraq had NOTHING to do with revenge for 911.....there is a long list of justified reasons for the war.....not the least of which.....they declared war on us FIRST
While Al Quida and Iraq did not love each other.....they did support each other.....in fact Saddam funded Al Quida (we have the transfer documents and the testimony of Saddam's wife)

Greg
I believe that you are wrong. Do you know where the United States gets the most oil from? Nope, you did not. It's actually CANADA, yes, that is correct. I believe it was to get rid of Sadam Hussein once and for all so we didn't have to deal with his little charades. The guy invades Kuwait, we throw him out, then he continues to cause problems.....just like all good little ruthless dictators do.

We threw his @ss out......deal with it. Isn't that what libs say now? "We won, deal with it". Well, our soldiers won....yes they did. I love them. So deal with it.

The only person who knows for sure why we invaded Iraq is Bush and he's not telling. Some say it was for oil, which is what I believe to a degree. Get Saddam out and replace him with someone who is on friendlier terms with the U.S. and will increase the oil production thus lowering oil prices.

Some say to get rid of an evil dictator. First, we helped Saddam overthrow his government and come into power back in the 1960's. Secondly, we sold/gave him the WMD's he used on his own people (which was over 20 years ago when he did that). Finally, any weapons he may have had posed no threat to the U.S. If we're so concerned about evil dictators then why didn't we invade Cuba instead? That's right in our back yard. What about North Korea? They definitely have the capability to build nuclear weapons, so why didn't we invade them?

We don't control the oil fields in Iraq. We are not establishing permanent bases and we are not dominating the Middle East. I'm happy to discuss this but can you understand my frustration that given the three factors I have listed above, people like you still insists that we had an ulterior motive for going into Iraq?

Is it possible that you could actually study the facts of the war rather than believing what you "feel" is true and actually "know" something about it? Please get back to me on this. If you want to speak in person, I'm in Baghdad.

*~Karnac the Magnificent~*
Saddam was a bad man, a very, very bad man. He invaded and took over Kuwait. He had weapons of mass destruction. Moved them to Syria. He paid the family's of suicide bombers if they bombed a civilian establishment. Tortured and killed people if they blinked wrong. Should we have went there? That is debatable. However, the world is much better off without him. Just don't listen to too many College Professors. Colleges are 95% democrat and you will not get a honest answer.

there is no purpose in going to war with iraq, george w. was just looking for business possibilities for his buddies.
the problem now is how we are going to get out.
