Sure they do. They have tanks that even have 5-speed transmissions. 4 for Reverse and 1 for forward in case they are attacked from behind! |

Considering France has one of the most advanced armies in the world, I say hell yea. France builds Jet fighters that have few matches, they have a carrier fleet, and a field army that is numbered in the hundreds of thousands. France has seen a lot of military action in the last 40 years, fighting the godless communists in vietnam in Cambodia, pacification of the muslim terrorists in Algeria and north africa, fighting a growing muslim and immigrant problem within the country, deployments to Madagascar etc. France is a recognizeable military force and there is a reason we always ask them for help when we are deploying in the middle east. When I hear people make idiotic jokes about France, I am saddened to see how ignorant people can get. |

Ooh! Look at all these French-hating tough guys! When I was in the Marine Corps, I had a chance to train with units from the French Foreign Legion (part of the French army) on several occassions, and I can tell you that they'd mop the floor with the likes of you clowns! |

Yes, of course they do. The reason France was defeated in WWII is because they supported the Forts and Bunkers that was on the border with Germany while Germany built tanks and aircraft, the new wave of military fighting. France is cursed by the Battle of Verdun of WWI. We must not forget that France still help defeat the Germans at the end of WWII. The Free French Forces fought along side the American Army and the French Resistance helped gather Intel for the Allies as for D-Day and help Allied Air Crew Escape back to England. They have a good strong military to this day. I am an American who has worked with the French Military. Just because they did not go with us to Iraq does not mean they don't have a good military. The only thing they asked for was more evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction and was there any? This thing with the French hates the US, the US hates France. Americans should travel the areas of American WWI and WWII Battlefields, you will see that the French help take care of monuments and at their free will place the American Flags outside their home on special days. This French joke about surrender is childish. One should study its Military History as such The Battle of Verdun and maybe we understand a bit more. Also French and American can be just alike |

I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU PERCEIVE TO BE A REAL MILITARY. THEY HAD A REAL MILITARY IN WW2, BUT IT WAS THEIR LACK OF LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGY THAT COST THEM THE OCCUPATION OF THE NAZIS, NOT REALLY THEIR TECHNOLOGY OR NUMBERS. THEY WERE OUTWITTED AND DEFEATED BEFORE THE FIRST SHOT WAS FIRED. THEY HAD AN INPENETRABLE LINE OF DEFENSE ALONG THE GERMAN BORDER, SO HITLER PUT HIS FORCES IN AIRBORNE ASSAULTS FROM BEHIND, WHICH BROKE THEIR LINE OF DEFENSE AND THE PANZERS MARCHED INTO PARIS.
TECHNOLOGICALLY TODAY , THEY HAVE MODERN CAPABILITIES SIMILAR TO THE REST OF THE WESTERN ALLIES, BUT DO THEY HAVE THE "IT"...I DONT KNOW.
NOTE: THEY DO HAVE AN EXCELLENT NEW MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM FOR MODERN JETS. I FORGET WHAT IT IS CALLED, BUT IT GIVES THE PILOT A 270 DEGREE FIELD OF ACQUISITION FOR HIS MISSILES TO FIRE AT ENEMY THREATS. HE CAN LOOK OVER HIS SHOULDER LOCK ON THE TARGET WITH HIS EYEPIECE AND FIRE HIS WEAPON...THIS IS AN AWESOME ACHEIVEMENT. |

Yes.
Despite the popular French bashing going on here. I have talked to French soldiers (the perks of living in Germany) and seen their equipment. They are just as capable as any western nation. The GRU, the French special operations unit is on par with British SAS, German GSG-9, Russian Spetsnaz, and US Navy SEALS. It is not so much the spine of the fighting French soldier as it was their lack of government-based coordination and cooperation, and dedication to a military matter from its military and civilian leadership.
Examples:
1. World War 1. The Military was pushing a hesitant French government to repel the German invaders with the bulk of the army that the French government had pulled into the areas surrounding Paris instead of places in the French countryside that would have done some good. In World War I, the lack of sophisticated aerial weaponry and planes would have played to the advantage of the French who had some places where terrain would have severely hampered the German assault.
2. World War II. The French civilian authorities mindful of their mistake in World War I pushed the hesitant French generals to act on Nazi aggression as they burst around and rarely through the "impregnable" Maginot Line through the Ardennes to the North. France had around 117 fully capable divisions on hand to repel the German assault after the disasters in the north. Yet French generals themselves signed a peace agreement after the civil government fled Paris. This created a small pocket of Free France governed by Field Marshal Pontain as a Nazi puppet state called 'Vichy France'. The rest of France was made part of the Greater German Reich.
France has nukes, 1 nuclear aircraft carrier with accompanying battle group, and weaponry that is in some cases more sophisticated than American armed forces employ. They have the means, but their government and military authorities both have blundered so much that French military feats have become routs.Arrogance...likely, stupidity or spinelessness...certainly not. |

NOT THAT I KNOW OF AFTER WE DROVE GERMANY OUT AND WE CAME HOME. THERE WERE NO SOLDERS LEFT IN THE COUNTRY. |

yeah we have a real military. there's just a BIG difference with the other military: we're smart and we don't go invading other countries just to prove to the world we're a 'great nation'. If the world was highschool, America would be the stupid bully (usually on the football team), England the impressed and scared follower of said bully, and France the smart pacifist. |

Yes they do, and they are still trying to figure how many men they need to defend Paris, they haven't been able to do it yet. |

Ask a s.....d question like this again and I ask Chirac to nuke your s....d country, assh... The total number of military personnel is approximately 359,000. However, 100,000 of these are in the Gendarmerie, and thus a vast majority of these 100,000 are used in everyday law enforcement operations inside France and are not fit for external operations. |
