I have to say I do belive it is over the top. Troops who get injured get a maximum pay out of £285k if they need help for the rest of their lives but the MOD says that the pay out was so high due to the support that the boy will need. Why is it that this lad needs more support from his injury than a soldier that could have sustained the same injury. War is dangourus and if the boy hadn't been around the soldiers then he wouldn't have been shot. The vast majority of forces personnel join up for the security of the job, training and the lifestyle. People seam to think that they just want to go around killing people, maybe in the medievil days with rape and pillage but now the forces are a lot more professional and try to save lives rather than to kill people. It just happens that sometimes service personnel are injured or even killed. They don't join up thinking I am going to get injured or killed, they just don't think about it and get on with trying to help people. People also think that service people get loads of money for being in a war zone, this is not true and a soldier could get as little as an extra £6 a day for being away, which is taxed! Also people who are against the war seam to think the services has a say if they want to go, wrong again. If you don't go then you can be charged with the possibity of going the miltary prison or even out of a job with the possibitly of joining the hundreds of ex service people on the streets of London. As you may have guessed I am in the forces, not at all happy about the 2 major conflicts we are in but it's my job and I have to get on with it. I just wish the general public backed the guys doing the job and had a go at the govenment rather than having a go at lads in uniform such as in peterbrough. Rant over |

I hate this stupid war
We pay for it with the lives of our youth and even more heavily now from our taxes. seeing as we are funding it who in the UK actually wanted this war?
This region will always be tearing itself apart, it has always been the same. nothing would make more sense than to pack up and leave them to it tomorrow |

well without disparaging our soldiers and i totally agree that this is not right, but why are we there at all, wouldn't it better for our soldiers to all come home, away from a conflict that no one in their right mind wanted, and only Blair and Bush seem to have a vested interested in. I support our British soldiers, and think that they are doing a difficult job in a no win situation, but really its time to say enough deaths, they can't go on and should now be brought back before more Iraqi, Brits and indeed anyone is killed. |

Unfortunately it's the spoils of war - In all wars innocent civilians get killed. Look at ww1 and ww2. Were innocent civilians there given thousands of pounds for being shot? I think not. Are our soldiers or widows given millions of pounds compensation because they are shot or killed because they have defective equipment and clothing supplied (or not) by our useless ministry of defence and government? No i think not. If it wasn't for the oil we wouldn't even be there!!! Mugabe in Zimbabwe is commiting the same sort of crimes as Sadaam was in Iraq, but we haven't gone in there because they haven't got oil or anything else that the British and Americans want!!! Get our soldiers out of Iraq and Afghanistan NOW. |

2 million!!!
That is ridiculous!!! Our soldiers get limbs torn off and IF they get compensation it doesnt even reach to the hundred thousands, let alone millions. As for the widows, there even lucky if they see any compensation. |

how could the U.S. defense have gotten away with murder if it was a British soldier who did the shooting?????? |

The award isn't wrong but the amount is.
A British solder has a maximum compensation payment of £285K. How can a foreign national be worth almost 10x that of a British citizen.
It's a horrible situation but if the Iraqis would stop killing everyone then there would be very little violence in the country and people wouldn't get killed. It's the Iraqis fault that troops are stuck in the country and if they would stop murdering people then the troops would be able to leave. |

There was a rule about guns when I was in the British Army (1957-1965) - "Never point your gun at person unless you intend to shoot and kill them".
So why wasn't this civilian killed?
"Only the dead shall know an end of war".

Yeah but it is a mistake Britain is making too much such as the MI5 shooting of that Brasilian. |

Yes, it bugs me when people expect compensation for the unfortunate events of war and other armed conflicts.
And it really bugs me when people, like you, blame the US for every problem in their tiny lives. Accidents happen. Not everyone is perfect like you. The rest of the humans on this planet are humans, and make mistakes.
It's good to know that the British think of themselves as gods. One would think that the Gods, the British citizen, would not be bothered by a little bullet. Perhaps you are not gods, and are only human. Get off your high horse. |

I dont feel like comenting about the 2 million pounds, However Some of you who have responded are wrong when saying the American soliders dont get any compensation at all if injured.
The fact is Bush DID make a new law a while back stating that ANY U.S. solider that recieves ANY type of "Life changing injury" they will be compensated at least 100,000 U.S Dollars.
I am not saying I think that is at all fair by anymeans, However I am just stating the facts. |

just for clarity, the soldier was talking to the boy, who he had befriended, and the rifle fell and it went off. |

yes, a little bit. Read this link for a similar situation in the USA:-

Seems to be the case that the more you do the less you get |

Yet again, this bloody Government have totally lost the plot. How many bullet proof vests could £2m buy for the lads and lasses on the front line. I did 3yrs in uniform (under a different Government) and when I hear things like this, it makes me wonder why I bothered. We're being sold out. |

No
I'm 100% pure bred English, and I think the award was justified - the war is not
British army members know what they're getting into, so I have no sympathy for them ... they are not defending Britain, protecting Iraqi civilians from opressive regimes or doing anything heroic, just attacking a country in pursuit of oil interests for our government
Terry Lloyd was a journalist going into a war zone, what does he expect? He knew the risks!! |
