If a single adult living with, and dependent on his parents, joins the military, would he or she be legally considered independent, like on tax forms and such.

Yes since once you go to basic training/boot camp, you are no longer under the care of your parents. Dependent means that you live under the same roof (you will live in the barracks), and your parents pay for most of your expenses (you get paid and live off of it). If you are a reservist, you will fall under independent during your initial training but can fall under dependent after you come back. |

The simple answer is yes, but the longer more complicated answer might be no. This is especially true on taxes. Were you to join the military in the last few months of the year, it would make no sense for you to use your exemption on your tax form, but your parents could still get a windfall (legally) by listing you as a dependent. I hope and assume you still have a good relationship with your parents. Work the numbers both ways on the taxes and see how you and they come out better. |
