Does "round" mean cartridge or bullet?
|
I've been told both. I get the impression that BEFORE being fired, "round" means "cartridge", but AFTER being fired, "round" means "bullet". (So, for example, this would explains why I sometimes hear or read people talk about "incoming rounds" during combat. I assume they don't mean that the enemy is tossing cartridges at them.) Thanks.

Sorry about the confusion English English and American English and I am living in Australia I hope this explains everything
Second edit A cartridge (also known as a "round") packages the bullet, gunpowder and primer into a single metallic case precisely made to fit the firing chamber of a firearm
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartridge_(firea...
Edit a round is complete cartrige or bullet depending on which side of the pond you are on in most cases you have a projectile and a brass case or Steel case
I beleive USA calls them Cartridge cases we call them Bullet cases
USA a complete Unite is a cartridge
the UK a complete unit is a Bullet
and according to wikipedia a round is a complete Cartridge
end of Edit
IE an L1A1 has a 15 Round Magazine and a L2 A1 has a 30 Round magazine and a S&W revolver with 6 chambers Holds 6 rounds
a Defa Gun fires 12 to 1400 rounds a Minute
I am a retired Warrant Officer Explosives Ordnance Engineer who served in the the Air force for 38 years and was Inspector Of explosives No 1
Projectile + case = 1 round

A round is the ball, the projectile. Normally when someone says, "place some rounds in that weapon", they are referring to the bullet itself, even though the ball and cartridge are chambering in together. It doesn't mean "cartridge", never seen cartridges coming down range before, unless like you said, they are being thrown! |

It means bullet both times. it's just part of the cartridge before being fired. |

RekonDog is on the money.
Round refers purely to the projectile.
Cartridge, brass, case's all refer to the object which holds the projectile.
Edit - I'm not doubting your expertise Armourer; but, you say a round is a complete bullet. But, 'bullet' refers only to the projectile. |

A "round" is a complete, prepared weapon system, sub-system or weapon component. A Tomahawk Cruise Missile, fully prepared and ready for launch is referred to as an "All-up-round". "Incoming" refers to any weapon the enemy is deploying in close proximity to you or your position. Could be a mortar shell, artillery shell, etc. |
