Although women were encouraged to join the services, especially young, single women, it was not until 1941 that Britain became the first country to call up (conscript) women, to take part in war work.
At first this only applied to single women between the ages of 18 and 26, but later women up to the age of 51 were included, unless they had children under the age of fourteen, when war work was voluntary. Conscripted women had the choice of working in the services, in civil defence or in industry. Those who couldn't work were encouraged to look after the children of those who could.

Conscripted Women generally worked in roles supporting the war effort or in supporting the armed forces in auxillary, nursing or other such roles. |

I don't think there's been a draft for quite a long time but women do go in to warzones.
If they're a Medic, Logistics, Dog Handler and things along those lines they are allowed to work 'on the front line'.
They are not allowed to join the army in a Combat Role other than Artillery who work from a long distance of the front line anyway. Normally from camp.
TA and reservists can be required to serve but they have the option to turn it down unlike people in the regular forces. |
