BAH is authorized in certain cases:

if you are married and have accompanied orders

If you are single and at least an E4 with 4 years in or an E5.

BAH is based on the average price of a RENTAL based on zip code of the DUTY STATION and paygrade.

If married or of a certain rank, yes. They give you so much extra cash... if your rent is over that, then you pay the difference... If it's under that, you keep the extra.

The military typically won't pay single recruits for off-base housing. If you're married with dependents they'll give you BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) that varies depending on your rank, location and dependent status. A calculator for 2009's BAH amounts is linked below.
