EMP blasts, and shortwave radios/battery operated?

Regarding EMP blasts, supposedly from our enemies, I am assuming these blasts would destroy communications. How about a short wave radio? Would they still work ? Would it be a good idea to have one? Think of what our lives would be like here in America with our communications down.

EMP destroys electronics that are operating at the time.

If you had a radio that was turned off, emp would not effect it.

Of course it would effect the radio transmitters in your area.
