Do you honestly think that if Iran had a valid reason for taking those people they would just give them back to be nice?
The president of Iran said he is pardoning them as an Easter gift to the British people. More than likely he realized that a full on military confrontation was coming that his country wouldnt be able to survive.
This was planned by the Iranians plain and simple. First of all the Brits were in Iraqi waters. This has been confirmed by the Indian ship they had just searched, it was confirmed by US and UK GPS, and it was confirmed by the Iranians when they sent the GPS grids back to the Brits in an effort to prove their territory had been violated. The GPS grids that the Iranians sent proved that the Brits were in Iraqi waters, so the Iranians sent another set back that had obviously been doctored
They knew that the Brits were searching merchant vessels coming out of Iran. I am sure that they were monitoring radar traffic for several days ahead of time. So they knew the likely patrol routes for the British operations there. So all they would have to do is wait or a merchant vessel like the Indian ship involved to come out of Iran, and wait for the UK personnel to attempt a search. I am sure that they didnt want to get the Indians involved so they waited until the Indian ship had left, and then sent an Iranian coast guard ship to intercept the British peronnel who were only in a small rubber craft.
They attempted to capture some US personnel but it didnt work out for them

The incident described in the above article took place of course on Iraqi soil. So they already proved that they were willing to violate Iraqi territory to get US or UK personnel.
I think they wanted some US or UK military prisoners for leverage against the Brits, the US, the UN, and the IAEC. They have shown in the past that if they are in a politically weak position then they will take hostages. I can only conclude that they gave these prisoners up because they know Bush is trigger happy. Say what you want about Bush and his policies but fear of a full on confrontation over this with the US and UK is the only reason that Iran all the sudden got nice. |

Absolutely not, as clearly evidenced by the photo showing the GPS unit displaying the location of the capture. The Brits were in Iraqi waters at the time of their capture. Even the Iranians said so when they released the first set of GPS coordinates the day it happened - coordinates which just happened to match the location shown by the Brits. The next day the Iranians came out with a new set of coordinates and said, "No, THIS is where the infidels were!"
They're all full of crap. |

GPS doesn't lie...They were in Iraqi waters |

No.. but the real question should be why did the British not defend themselves? |

Who knows? after all it is the army we are talking about here and IF they were in Iranian waters they wouldn't want anyone to know. We only know what the army want us to know. |

I'm glad you got your soldiers back but I must ask - What will you do the next time they kidnapp your soldiers? And there will be a next time. |

I doubt it. Iran is just trying to flex its muscles. |

Now...where they were is not important ...the important thing is they got released...and hopefully they will be going home for a while to have some good times with their famillies . Yes !!! after this ordeal they deserve that...and now the time came to deport all IRANIANS from UK. |

No I don't. Iran was flexing their muscles, making a show of force, at he British expense. |

Not likely. I have no idea why Iran would kidnap 15 British sailors. I wonder what they were trying to accomplish. |

I bet they were. Otherwise, the Iranians have bigger balls than anyone on the planet. That would be one heck of a gamble.
Risking war with the UK over 15 soldiers. That is more ballsy than what Hizbollah tried last summer. |

Would you go in Iran's waters? I can deal with dangerous Crazy is another matter. |

What planet are you on?
There is a clearly defined mission and getting into a spat with the neighbours is not part of it. The last thing anyone in the coalition military in the Gulf would do is poke a stick in that hornets nest.
The Iranians first claimed the Brits were a couple of miles off where they said they were - but quickly changed that story when it was pointed out that, even if they were exactly where the Iranians said, they would still have been in Iraqi waters.
It reminded me of the time Saddam's guy denied there were any American soldiers within 20 miles of Baghdad when we could all see that behind him the US tanks were roaring down the highway. |

yea they were most likely in iranian waters. the soldiers were not served with justice. they should have gone to trial like anyone else. its like allowing Moussaoui to go free. |
