Enlisting in the army.?
|
Hello, I've been experimenting with illegal drugs for atleast 2 years now.
I've been considering a career in the army, but I've been a chronic cannabis smoker (nearly everyday, unless I can't get it) for atleast a year now maybe more. I really want to join the army because I believe this will turn my life around, and I've heard great things about the army and I believe it will give me great skills + be alot more challenging + giving me things to do. I work part time in a supermarket and it isn't working out. I want to join the army because the current economic depression has left me with no other choices, I wanted to get an apprenticeship but I believe this will be impossible. However, I am mentally addicted to cannabis, I work 3 times a week which leaves me nothing to do and life is sooooooo boring it's un-imaginable. I believe if I joined the army it would give me a much better quality of life, however since i'm addicted i'm pretty sure it will be very hard for me to stop, and I've told myself numerous times that I will stop smoking cannabis, however I have failed to do so, I just don't have the willpower to stop, since I work part time I have so much free time and theres nothing for me to do EXCEPT GET HIGH. I've tried thinking of a hobby, but theres nothing I can think of. I guess what I'm saying is that when I do the medical piss test I will test positive for cannabis misuse. Even if I stop the thc will remain in my system for probably 3-4 months. I've read on the army careers website it states this:
"Can I join the Army if I've used drugs?
The Army recognises the issue of drug misuse in civilian life, so if you've had issues with drugs in the past this will not normally prevent you from joining. But once you enlist, the Army has a zero tolerance attitude to illicit drug use. You will be liable by law to random compulsory drug testing and if these tests return positive, you will almost certainly be discharged."
Will my chronic cannabis use disqualify me from the army, I mean if I pass the selection test and do the medical test and they find high concentrations of thc in my urine...will I not be able to join the army? Oh I forgot to mention obviously when If I have pass all my tests (except for the medical one I will suspect) I will discontinue my drug use.
Will I be allowed entry into the army?
And yeh, like I said I won't be able to stop smoking cannabis unless I get into the army ofcourse because that WILL give me the will power to stop, the reason i can stop is because 24/7 and then I buy more cannabis and get stoned.
Advice?
OH and another question, I'm like a stick, I have the arms of an 10 year old but I'm tall about 6'4, would I be able to handle military training? i'm 16 years old. Please no anti drug arguments in here I get enough of that from my mother enough as it is. Additional Details Remember I HAVE LEFT SCHOOL.
and I live in the uk.

The army will accept you if you have experimented with drugs. However you seem to have slipped beyond the experimentation stage and you are now actually dependant. I was a recruiter in a careers office and the Army's official line is obviously zero tolerance. I have also seen soldiers discharged on several occasions due to compulsory drugs testing.
I interviewed a quite a number of people who admitted to using drugs. Our line to them is, the minute you walk through our door and start an application, then you need to cease using drugs. The recruiters will appreciate your candour if you are open and honest with them.
I have a young lad who is currently serving in the same infantry Battalion as me. I interviewed him, and recruited him into the Army. he decided that also wanted to turn his life around and saw us as the answer! He has succeeded so far!" It will not be an easy path for you, maybe you should seek professional help for your cannabis problem. As you mentioned you need to get yourself fit. If you manage to turn fitness into your hobby instead of weed then you will have cracked, although I know it is easy for me to say. However as Al G has already pointed out, only YOU can make the decision and try and turn your life around. You've already recognised that your going nowhere as a stoner, it's up to you to cross the Rubicon and do something about it. |

I'm not meaning this to sound like a lecture, I bet you've had enough of those.
You're in a catch 22 situation. You're underweight because you do drugs so you won't get in unless you build yourself up.
You also say you won't give smoking dope up until you get into the Army, but you won't get in unless you give up before you apply. This is a cop out and you're making excuses for yourself
This is something you have to do for yourself, nobody else can do it for you. You need to take responsibility for your own future and decide if you want to be stoned for the rest of your life or make something worthwhile of it. Only then will you get close to getting into the Army |

Selection can take about 6 months until basic training. So if you stop smoking now, and apply, by the time you get all the tests etc it should be out yourself system
But by the sounds of things you won't be able to give it up, if you've been smoking for so long. If you can prove to yourself that you can just pack it in, then the army may be an okay place for you - because if you apply... it'll get much harder.
Another thing, your mother is right... and I'm 6'4 and I'm trying to get in (next year) so that won't be an issue (Guards at buckingham palace have to be a minimum I think of 6'2 ..) and the 10 year old arm thing, you will have to train to get in as there are basic requirements, so I'd go to the gym a bit, then you'll get bigger... |

If you are 16 now and have been using drugs for 2 years, then that means you started when you were 14. While it might seem harmless to you, you have now caused damage to your body, damage that might not be able to be fixed at all. You can suffer from long term affects because you stated that you smoke it every 24 hours.
There is things for you to do, study, get good grades, do volunteer work, join the Cadets, get a second job, do anything to better yourself and what you want to do. Because if you don't apply yourself now at 16 then you will have serious problems later on. Joining the military isn't going to be the quick way out. Especially if you have an addiction. Get help, see a counselor, speak to your parents about it and start down a better road. |

im sorry son but the First thing when you talk to a recruiter they will ask you if you have ever taken ANY illegal drugs and if you say yes they wont even talk to you and they do a back ground check on every one so you Pretty much screwed that up but im glad you want to join the army. |

In regards to "like a stick" - most countries have physical aptitude tests as part of your enlistment process. Your size isn't important, however your physical strength and fitness level are.
Additionally, I doubt you would be put through if you presented with high THC levels still in your system. The quote about drugs is referring to past users, not present. If the piss will be positive for 3-4 months after quitting, that's how long you'll need to be clean for before enlistment.
At risk of giving you the tired old anti-drug rap... If you're serious about enlistment, you need to quit drugs and start exercise. Some people even find exercise a good tool to help get clean, who knows. Otherwise, give up now. |

If you need to rely on drugs. You are not what Army is looking for.
What happens if you can't handle the pressure ? You will turn to drugs, becoming a liability to yourself and to the guys who are relying on you.
If you really want to go into the army, stop now with your drugs, get it out your system and get yourself into condition. They will check your urine on your entrance medical and they do regular drug tests. They close the regiment down, pick a percentage from the regimental nominal role and regardless of your rank you have to provide a sample. You will not be able to beat the system.
Thats the hard facts, but you still have the chance save yourself. the ball is in your court and you must deal with it. |
