Enlisting with degree a "step backwards"?

I want to serve my country and money's not an issue here. And I'm not sure if I really want an officer's responsibilities.

There are certain specialties and job descriptions you can only get as an enlisted soldier. There are certain responsibilities you will only have to deal with as a commission. So many people have a hard on for the better pay and living accomodations that they don't think twice about the job satisfaction. Go ahead and enlist and keep your nose clean so that you can turn in an OCS packet when/if you're ready. Good luck. |

This is NOT a step backward. Many enlisted folks have degrees. It's not a requirement for enlisted as it is for officers, of course. You will still have plenty of responsibilties as enlisted, esp as an NCO.
EDIT: Ray, if there could be a "best" for humor, you'd get it every time. Thumbs up to ya, Amigo. |

I've been in almost 21 years, with 9 enlisted, and I can honestly tell you that except for the pay being an Officer is a whole lot less fun. Don't get me wrong, being a Lieutenant and Platoon Leader was probably the best time of my career but that was 2 years out of 11 years as an Officer with the rest being a lot of mundane staff work, important yes, but fun...not so much.
If your not sure if you really want an officer's responsibilities, you probably don't want the responsibilities of anyone E-3 or above either. Its not unusual to find a Private manning a forward outpost with the responsibility of protecting his fellow troops and civilians.
I recommend starting enlisted. At least with your degree you can apply for OCS in a couple of years without having to scrape together a degree while working full time like I did my first 6 years enlisted. |

You won't automatically become an officer because you have a degree and it definitely won't be a step backwards whether you get a commission or go enlisted.
Check out different branches and do your research. I went in with a degree stayed enlisted. I was in the Army for 11 years and now an Army Civilian. I have had a great career and many steps a head of many of my fellow college grads.
Having a degree helps for the life after. Staying enlisted gave me more control over my assignments which lead me to my job. I work with mostly retired SGM and Field Grade Officers and they call me Sir or Mr. A couple months ago I was a Staff Sergeant. |
