It is true that bullets fragment and disintegrate upon impact with the water, even from a .50 Cal, but if this captain had any sense he would have cut the raft and let them all drown.

I heard the pirates are calling in "mother ships" to be rescued and they're still looking for them. I think the Navy is waiting for the motherships so they can blow them out of the water. SEALS are already there...they just need a President that will actually comment on the situation, grow a pair and get it done

I am glad to see some thinking that is along the lines of my thinking...

I am a Navy Vet...and I know that the Bainbridge could have easily lit that lifeboat up with the 50 cal....if they had the authorization from Obama.

I am shocked that we didn't light them up when we had a small chance when the Captain jumped overboard. I would be pissed if I were him. He did his part, jumped overboard....but we were not allowed to do our part and take out the Pirates.

Now we are heading for a huge showdown with these guys...Yeah, we have the Boxer headed that way, but they have many ships with many more innocent hostages headed that way as well.

To me, this is a huge defining moment in Obama's presidency....even though I am not sure most of Amercia feels that way. He better be on the phone reading whatever SEAL team is available and sending them there to crush the Pirates with whatever means necessary. Yeah, some hostages may get killed, but the objective is to kill every last one of those Pirates and send the message that, "Homie don't play that" when it comes to taking U.S. hostages.

First of all, without communications, how would you know what the hostage was thinking? You see him dive under water, now you have to interpret why he's diving, how long can he hold his breath while you take measurements and aim the gun(s). If he isn't far enough away from the boat, you could kill him through collateral damage.

Secondly, the pirates had recovered the hostage within seconds of him leaving the lifeboat. There wasn't time to respond with any firepower.

I'm sure that if Bainbridge did act and failed, he would be blamed for the failure. If he succeeded, he would have been the hero. I'm sure he wasn't thinking of being a failure or a hero. He wants the captain alive and freed.

There are two solutions: Political and practical. Political solutions take time. Practical takes seconds. Take the practical solution and use the political process to explain the solution.
