Failing Navy Seals BUD/S training?

Failing Navy Seals BUD/S training?

Okay, I'm considering the Navy Seals, and if I was to join I wouldn't plan on failing. However, I love to plan ahead. So if one was to fail BUD/S training due to injury or not meeting the requirements, are they aloud to choose their rating (occupation) for example, if you fail BUD/S can you go for Corpsman or Chaplain or something? Or does the Navy just assign what you'll do. I'd prefer answers from those who have served in the Navy. Thank you in advance.

Go to any Navy ship and you will find all kinds of paint chippers and deck swabbers who always start a conversation with "I was going to be a SEAL, but.......".

There are two ways to become a Seal.

You can sign a Seal challange contract and go to Bud/s after Basic training with being a Seal as your Rate.

Seal is now a Rate in the Navy.

Or you can strike for a Rate, go to A school for that rate, then apply for Bud/s

If you washout with a Seal Challange contract, the Navy chooses your rate. Although they might offer you 2 or 3 to choose from.

If you strike a Rate first, then if you washout, you just go back to your Rate and are assigned to the fleet.

You can always recycle into the next class.

within reason. you will be permitted to choose from a list of ratings that you qualify for and that they have a need for. there is also the possibility that will will decide for you.

BTW.. Chaplain.. will not be an option unless you have your Masters in Divinity, experience and get permission from your religion's governing body. and HM probably will not be an option either as it is very overmanned and severely backed up at A school.

ETA: some answers say you can retry. not always the case. If you 'ring the Bell' you are done forever. if the docs refuse to allow you another shot, you are done forever. and at some point your chain of command will just plain NOT let you try again.

and what Jeepers said about the two ways into BUD/s is correct. SEAL is indeed it's own rating now.

I think you can try and retake BUD/S if you want. But there a camp type thing were they let you do a kind of practice BUD/S. Its taught by an ex Seal but he gets you ready for the test. However what ive heard about BUD/S it doesn't matter how strong you are or even really active. Its mainly based on determination. Whoever is the last one standing becomes a SEAL. You have to want to be a Seal to be a Seal.

You're right in always having a back-up plan. Don't listen to what wannabes and never-haves tell you. I am Australian and have NOT served in the US military, but I have served in Australian Military and am in the process of re-enlilsting into an SF role so I have done heaps of reading in regard to SEAL Training etc. Your best option is to enlist under a trade you ARE interested in other than SEAL, and as soon as you enter request to go to BUD/S. You will complete basic and then be shipped of the BUD/S (Hopefully!). Ask your recruiter (ever so nicely!) to try get you some phone time with someone at BUD/S.

A recruiter will only tell you what they want you to know and point you in the direction the military needs. They have little regard to your desire. If you ring out due to injury, generally you will be rolled back to another class after you have recovered. There is a great Discovery channel documentary that follows a SEAL class. One guy in the class had been at BUD/S for four years due to injury etc!

Another good read by an Ex-Command Master Chief (SEAL) is "One Perfect Op). They guys gives an outline of his history with the SEALs from Basic through to his retirement after serving as Command Master Chief BUD/S.

Good luck!

PS. John, in the US military they actually do allow guys to begin SF training before category training, as is my understanding.

Once you become a Seal i doubt you complain about what job you got.....

remember has high drop out rate for a reason..cause getting to BUD/S its the easy part..coming out as Navy Seal its the challenge.

i hope your are pretty good swimmer...

It depends how far into the course you are. If you have knowledge of their classified tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), they will drown you at sea.

John
You will go to school for a rating before you attend Seal School. If for whatever reason you dont make it through, you will already be what you will do in the NAVY. Thats how it works. They use base rates for the teams, divers and EOD.
