Getting a degree in the Navy.?
|
I am planning on going to the navy after high school, I would like to go for construction and building, since i would like to get a degree in Architectural. I was wondering how i would go about getting my degree while being enlisted... like would i leave for college, get a degree online, etc.

my son is in the Navy and from what I understand, his training earns him his college credits and experience, then when he gets out he can transfer those credits to a college and take the other mandatory classes to get his degree. They also may send you for civilian classes if they need someone with those qualifications and don't have the authority to train you and your rate requires it, but you won't be able to leave for college and come back afterward. For example he will be getting certified to repair Xerox equipment, but the Navy cant certify him, only Xerox can. |

You can take the courses while serving in the Navy.
My degrees are not in Architecture, but I have seen about every other degree earned while guys were serving.
I see no reason why you could not do it.
For degrees that normally want a lot of residency, I would check out the NY Regents programs. |

Many Navy bases have something set up with colleges/universities and college professors come to the base and teach.
I took all of my classes for my Associate Degree in a training building at night through the University of Maryland and Saint Leo University. I got the degree from St. Leo.
You take the classes they have to offer. Usually regular classes like Algebra, English, Psychology, Art, History, and what ever. I even took World Religions on base as part of a Liberal Arts Degree.
Get the basic classes out of the way then transfer them to another school later.
You can also take online courses. There are actually a lot of options. Some duty stations are close to state universities and people attend them after hours. It is just a little more challengeing when you have sea duty or overseas duty. |

There are many variations, but the odds of getting paid by the navy to attend school full time are very slim. There actually are a couple such programs, but don't count on those. Failing that, there are on-line classes available. In addition, most large ships and shore installations offer some college classes on the ship or base. Then, there is the prospect of going to school part-time, on your own time. This would require getting stationed on shore, near a university, with as assignment that has regular and predictable days and hours. That also happens (and I managed to get a degree that way) but you can't count on it.
Just go about your business but always keep the goal in mind. When you get done with training and get stationed somewhere, then start exploring the availabe options. I went to seven different Universities, part-time, nights, and got my first degree while serving on active duty. Others do not. It requires a lot of effort and a bit of luck. |

You can take class's in your off duty time.
Either online, on base or at a local university.
You will only be taking class's part time.
It all depends on your duty schedule.
You still have to go to work everyday |
