Getting a security clearance BEFORE you get a job/assignment?

Is there a way? I'd really like to get that figured out before I start applying for jobs when I finish grad school, or my chances are hurt dramatically by having to wait a loooong time since I've been abroad (which slows down the application process).

One way to do it is to look into federal internships/fellowships for summers while you're in grad school. A lot of them (State, FBI, DoJ, DoD) will grant you clearances for the duration of your internship. They will revoke them when you return to school--unless you sign an intent to return or can get a contractor to hold your clearance for you--but it will speed up your reinvestigation when you seek a job after grad school. The fact that you have previously held a clearance will also be a boost to your resume.
And just a tip, start applying for jobs after grad school in September or October of your final year -- that way the background investigation will be completed about the time you graduate. |

Well if you have $50,000 to spend,
You could pay the fee and have a clearance done yourself.
Clearances are not free, someone has to pay for them. |

no. your employer must start the process and they will not do so until you are qualified for the job. you cannot initiate a clearance investigation on your own. Nor could you afford to do so. |
