Getting to E7 or E8 in the Army National Guard? And moving from one unit to another (Different states)?

I am going to be either an 11B (Infantryman) or 68W Combat Medic (Healthcare Specialist). Which one of those two MOSs will be faster to get promoted to E7 or E8? If I get into the National Guard as an E3 (PFC) then how long and how hard will it be for me to get to E7 or E8 (SFC or MSG/1SG)? Is there anything I can do to make getting the promotion faster? How many times do you think I will be deployed throughout the time to get that far in rank (deployments aren't important to me I am just curious.)? Am I able to move to a different state and unit once I am in? I am 17 and going to join at 18. Im going to do College First and get an Associates degree and my license to be an RN then start my career. I cannot afford to live in California so I was planning on moving. How hard will it be to move from one unit in one state to a different unit in a different state?

I wont be moving as an E7 or even an E5. Once im done in school (2years) I will be an E4.

Interstate transfers are common and easily done for a variety of reasons. It is sometimes difficult to find slots for Senior NCOs, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it. You're probably talking about something you're going to deal with in 15 years. You will have to decide to re-enlist a couple times before then. Lots of other bridges to cross first. |

In the national guard, it could take you 20 years to make E-7.
There has to be a open E-7 slot in your national guard unit before you can be promoted to E-7.
Yes, it is possible to change national guard units.
But, the higher your rank, the harder it becomes.
I can't thinkof any national guard units, that would allow an E-7 to transfer from another guard unit.
They would give that slot to someone already in thier unit. |

I'm an 11B, been in about a year and from what I've seen you're gonna be in a long time before you make it to E7. You don't get promoted as quickly in the National Guard as you do in active Army. Technically you can become an E5 after three years of service, but getting promoted to that in that little time is hard because slots don't open up that often and when they do it comes down to promotion points, and chances are there will be a lot of guys that have been E4's for a long time with a lot more promotion points than you when a slot does open up. So it'll probably be a while before you become an NCO. It's actually easier to become an officer if you're gonna get a degree. Just be the best soldier you can and jump at any chance you get to go to any schools you can to get promotion points. As far as changing states, I know some guys that have done it and I don't believe it's that hard to do. |
