Maintaining a policy of "no negotiation" requires more spine than cowardly paying ransoms. What if it were your loved-one; would you have the courage to refuse to meet a randomer's terms?
That aside its just a good idea. Imagine what would happen if we negotiated? It would open the floodgates for every other terrorist / pirate to kidnap other people knowing full well that "the rich Americans will pay anything to get their citizens out of trouble".
So what would you prefer: no negotiating & potentially losing one loved one, or negotiating & risk becoming a global welcome mat upon whom everyone else walk all over.
Extrapolation: let's assume love is more important than money (it is, but bear with me). Hypothetically you pay the ransom, and more kidnappings occur as a result (since pirates know they can get money this way). What happens when you are out of money? Do you really think the pirates will release your loved-one if you say you cannot afford the ransom? No, they will say, "Well if you can only afford 20% of the ransom, then we will give you 20% of your loved one.... Here's their head. Bring more money, next time."
So you see. Being a hard-*** is just good sense for future problems. |
