Going away present for a Marine.?

My best friend is going to iraq for his second tour in June. I was wondering if anyone knew of something that they are allowed to take with them that would be of use to him... either to survive like a K-Bar, compass, etc... or something entertainment, already has an ipod. Please only answer with things you KNOW they can take. thank you very much

I can tell you from experience, if they haven't changed venders since the early 1980s the leather dress belts are pathetic (please no bad mail I'm only being honest and not in any way being a bad guy... I've read some military dress belts had been that way as far back as WWI so maybe there is a tradition... or running gag... I donno)

But get something that other Marines will definately not think come from any other service. I had to leave the Marines after donning a dark blue cap; apparently having had been shot 13 times with those last few months didn't show through the rest of the uniform ~ and I got into a bit of a tussle over being thought "out of uniform" even though on my own time.

Web belts can get old quick when your home sick. Other Marines might see a slightly nicer off duty uniform (that's still "legal") as a compliment to the corp and bond. It's a possibility anyway. But don't go too far; the goal here is not to get shot as a spy, or be refused medical treatment because nobody knows what uniform he's wearing should he get a scratch while falling down drunk...

I know of people in WWI that were shot for being a spy for having worn the wrong color underwear.

Of course, this is not at all likely now. But the enemy has been known to wear knock off uniforms.

Ask someone who knows.

And I hope I've not upset you.

I'm sure guard duty stateside is more dangerous, on average.

I don't think you should send pics of family or friends. These will encourage homesickness by making him think of home life.
