Going into the army.. a chance to grow up?

I'm 15 and don't know what to do. I've considered going into the army.. seems like it would give me a chance to grow up and would give great experience. Not permenantly, just for a few years. What do you think?
Additional Details
By the way I'm British.

Have a GREAT day!

If you want to grow up a little, how about you live on your own after you graduate? There are a lot of other things you can do if youre looking to grow up. Military personell are among some of the most immature people Ive ever freaking met. Ive been a dependant and a soldier and all I saw were a bunch of alcoholics cheating on their wives and acting like retards. Anywho, youre really young. After you graduate high school go out and venture into the world!! The military tells you what to do most of the time, it will be like living at home with a meaner version of mom and dad. So after high school, either go to college or get a job, live on your own and pay your own bills. Youd be suprised with how quickly you can grow up without relying on your parents for so much.

Worked for me. I went in as an out of shape, stoned out, pathetic little 17 year old punk who thought he had it all figured out, you know? I learned better.
I came out a real man. Or at least damn near closer to being one than I ever would have gotten on my own. Capable of making my own, informed judgments about my own life and the world around me. Because of what the Army (U.S., by the way) taught me, I was able to drive on with my life as a capable, strong willed adult.

go on do it
I joined up for a few years, I was going to use the Army as a stepping stone. That was13 years ago and I'm still in and loving it

Join the Army and see the other world! Terry.

Whether you join the army, Royal Air Force or the Royal Navy makes little difference (I am assuming that you are British, if not the same thing for your own country applies). The main thing is that you should feel comfortable with your decision.
Once you are happy with that consider what sort of trade you want to follow if you can because the services tend to provide the best of trade training whether you are going to be a cook or some other technical tradesman.
Besides that the services train people to be fitter, more adult, take responsibility at earlier ages than civilian life, and more self reliant. All that fits you for later life.
I know that there are exceptions to this sort of approach, and you run more risks of injury and death than in civilian life but the advantages are far outweighed by the disadvantages.
Consider carefully what you want, don't be affected too much by what other people, including me, say and make as mature a judgement as you can. Don't forget you will be committing yourself whole heartedly for a number of years.

Go for it. It offers so many opportunities and you get so many "life lessons" so quickly. Highly recommended.

Go for it! I've two sons in the army One is Warrant Officer 2 now, the other Colour Sergeant. My dad was also in the Army during W.W. 2 It's not all about fighting, it is a great career for both male and female. It is what you make of it yourself though, you still need to work hard, adapt to discipline and learn how to take care of yourself. You can't phone home to Mum when things are going tough, but you' make as lot of good mates. Stick in, and you could come out with a good profession on civvy street. I'm a mum who's dead proud of my boys.

my friend is in the British army and has grown up a lot, he said in the army you have too because there's responsibilities, loyalty ect ect. I didn't think he would last that long in the army but he has proved me wrong and went to afghan this week for 6 months.

Don't take advice from people about things they've never tried themselves..

I'd say it depends on your academic level...If your'e a standard joe then go for the army..You'll develop mates that'll be with you for the rest of your life and experience stuff that you can't experience anywhere else....You'll travel the world and you'll meet a lot of lovely ladies...and lastly (they done this when i was in, not sure if it's still going), as long as you serve enough years you'll be applicable for a pre release course which'll enable you to learn a trade in preperation for your return to civvy street.

However if you do well at school and have a good academic track record then i'd say invest in your future and strive to get a good job so that one day you'll be able to have a comfortable life for yourself and your future family....It'll be a bit boring when your'e young but as an adult you'll know you made the right choice..

I done 9 years in the Fusilers (British Army)

Since you obviously have the interest in the military and to grow up and be a man, I would suggest you look into the Marines. Way better physical training, and if you are looking to fly fighter planes the Marines are basically taking over that section of combat. The Army is also very much indescriminant about who they take, they'll take pretty much anybody, Marines on the other hand will only take a select few that have the drive and high standards to be what is needed.
Look over all branches before you make your decision, make good choices now, stay out of trouble, pay attention in school and above all make sure this is actually something you want to do.

join the royal air force.

Powder Pete
Difficult at first but, once over the basic training, you will love it.

Companionship; excitement; knowledge; respect, ...and much, much, more.

You will certainly become a man.

Why not try for a regiment where you can learn a trade in mechanics, ...like the R.E.M.E., useful later on if you are into cars.

Or if you like the thought of blowing things up you could try the R.A.O.C., ...not really something you can use when you come out of the army.

If you are into cooking there is always the ACC.

Go for it, ...and good luck.

Sgt.Jordan
I was in the army for 5 years. Then I joined the R.A.F
I enjoyed the army very much (meeting new friends etc)
I think you would like the army!
But the R.A.F is very exciting aswell !

You mean the Chair Force?! Yes join the Chair Force, instead. You won't see or get much action. But, you'll get what you want - maturity.

Trust me. I'm an Army Veteran, and I wished I had joined the Chair Force, instead.

Oh yea, I forgot to tell you, the women in the Chair Force are a lot more attractive than most women in the Army. You may think that this is a non-issue, but after being in the Army for a couple of months, you'll be wanting to meet some pretty nice young ladies, and the Chair Force provides a lot of them.

BODGE IT AND SCARPER
Don't join the army, join the RAF. That's what I was in, the Airforce is much more civilised and you'll get far better training and qualifications for when you come back out in civi street. You wont have to run around like an idiot as much as the pongos do. We called them pongos, because everywhere the army goes, the pong goes. See the recruiting sergeant at a careers information office in a town near you! Be the best - RAF!
