Has any of you ever been spit and/or filpped-off by civilians when in Uniform in the US?

A few days a go when I was driving with my friend, this person spit on my car and a few minutes later a group of other people flipped me off and told us "f*ck you".
Has anything like this has happened to any of you when you're in your military uniform here in the United States? (Not deployed personnel please ;] )
For further info about this, read this bog entry:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=11026584&blogID=348724489 Additional Details I didn't do anything to piss anyone off. Like I explained in my blog entry, I remained professional. However, I came close to lose my professionalism. I did wish I were in a hand-to-hand combat situation with the guy who spit my car, though. Thanks for all your answers! Keep them coming!

Well, I would have to say no, it has not happened to me. I have been an Army Recruiter for the past 3 years and can honestly say it has not happened to me. I have had a few doors slammed in my face though for what ever reason I can not seem to find out.
Them are the ones that need the service the most specially if they are living in the United States of America!

Yes. While I served as a U.S. Marine.
I was home on leave. My hometown. Wearing my dress blues. I was late for a dinner party and had stopped off at the mall to pick something up for the expecting mother.
I accidently bumped someone while looking though my bag for my receipt. I was then stopped by two men while they were escorting two women.
Over the next couple minutes these two haters preceeded to talk to me in third person. Knocked my cover off, call me a few names and finally tore my ribbons off my chest.
I must have said excuse me about 5 times, but they kept positioning themselves so I couldn't walk away. I never said anything negative to either though everything in me told me to tear them to pieces.
They were haters. I gave them that right. As I took their abuse, it was clear in the eyes of their female companionship that at least the two women didn't approve of what these two did to me.
They're out there. Hating because they know no other way. To make themselves feel better. I gave them the right to be haters of my kind, my brothers and sisters, my Corps.
That's okay. I don't hate them. |

Took a break in service for college and was called "baby killer" by some know-nothing twenty-something in class, but that's about it. Unknown to her, there were several other prior service dudes in the same class and we jumped on her *** (verbally) and set her straight in front of the rest of the class. Never happened again. Also, our prof was an ex-Vietnam era Green Beret, didn't help her situation. |

That's really messed up, man....sounds like what happened to Vietnam Vets...I dont support this war, but I dont blame it on the poor vets fighting it. |

I remember in 1981, heading overseas after AIT and wearing my Class A uniform, being called a "baby killer" by some old chick at an airport.
I can understand people still being upset over the Vietnam war, but i was 12 years old when it ended, fer chrissakes. |

Yes, there were three people picketing on a corner and I was on my way home from national guard drill shortly after returning from Iraq. One of them flipped me off and they were yelling at my car. So I stopped in the middle of a busy street and got out and started walking toward them and they all started running like the devil was on their heels.
It was a good day. :) |

As I was never arrested and charged with assault for kicking every ounce of sh*t out of someone, I guess not. |

It never happened to me. And, if it had, they would never do it again - trust me!
Actually most people treated me with respect and appreciation by thanking me for my service, buying me drinks, etc.

My husband is in the Army National Guard, and I've found the opposite to be true. I seldom go anywhere with my husband while he is in uniform and that is because he goes to work every day, wearing the uniform, and then he comes home and takes it off. And when we go out, obviously he doesn't wear his ACU's.
But there have been cases when I've had to run him back and forth to work because we were down to one vehicle and we'd either stop for coffee or stop at the store for bread and he'd be in his uniform because we'd either be on our way to, or from, the Armory. And I can't tell you how many times someone has come up to us and thanked him and shook his hand, OR bought his coffee for him, OR was given his coffee for free. It amazes me every time it happens because I seldom get to see my husband as "the soldier". When he comes home from work, he is my "husband" and "daddy". I never get used to that happening and he has not yet even been to Iraq but people everywhere will thank him for what he does. (He will deploy next Jan. to Iraq) And it always makes me walk a little taller and also makes me even MORE proud of him and all but chokes me up everytime.
And, if someone should ever flip us off because he is a soldier, we will ignore them. Its a shame that our brave men and women have to also protect the rights and freedom of those ungrateful, ignorant a$$holes. They just don't get it...and they probably never will. |

Gotta go with Chief on this one. It never happened to me but if I ever see anyone do it to ANY serviceman/woman you will see me on every news show in the land because as I have said before, I would take a baseball bat to that person's head and pop it like a grape. Then, when I go to court, plead guilty, with no remorse at all.
Oh, I would then defacate on the dead body.

Actually, I have had the direct opposite reaction frm total strangers. I have a "Blue Star Flag" magnet on my car because my husband is deployed, and I have and Army Strong lic. plate with a VERY recognizeable Army saying as my vanity plate. I have had people beep and wave and give me the thumbs up. I have had strangers roll down their windows and thank me for being so supportive and I guess because they see the 2 car seats in my car, compliment me on being a strong, proud Army wife and tell me to keep my chin up. They have been nothing but nice. I guess because I live near a big Marine base, too everyone is very military conscious.
I do know that TARGET threw 2 soldiers out of the store for wearing their uniform into the store because the manager saw it as them "recruiting" in their store!! They went in for some DVD's and laundry soap!!
I was disgusted at that!!! I'm sorry that this happened to you! That sux! Since I am NOT in uniform, I can't say that I would have been as "nice" as you all were. I take my roll as an Army wife VERY seriously. NEVER screw with an Army wife! |

Yes about 6 yrs ago. My division graduated from Boot Camp that day, and we were all on liberty in uniform with family and friends scattered all over chicago, gurney, and great lakes. I was with my sister and her two friends when some wierdy came up to us and said "f*ck you, Squid!" and spit on the ground near my feet.(I was just glad he didn't get my shoe, because i was still at the time, a moron when it came to polishing shoes and boots to perfection). My sister's two guy friends chased him off. The end. |

Thankfully, I never ran into that problem (and for the most part, people respect military members in uniform where I am, even though there's a lot of war protesters).
I have to say though, I have heard a lot of stuff like that, and for the most part, I really wish they lived in China or North Korea. If they hate America so much, why do they continue living in it? I guess because those places don't let you have things like freedom of speech and freedom of expression. So they want the benefits of America without having to pay the cost of it (from the blood of wounded and fallen military members of past conflicts).
Yes, not everyone agrees with the President. But you shouldn't really take it out on the average soldier, because it's not like the private or captain over there whispered to Bush "Hey, we should invade Iraq!"
My mom made sure I got a good education and other privileges she never got while living in Laos during the Vietnam conflict (look up Hmong and Secret War in Laos for more info on that). She made sure I didn't take stuff here for granted like many of these anti-war protesters (and many others) do. |

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I was going to ask if you were stationed in CA but then I read the blog and saw that you were. Where I'm stationed is quite the opposite...I got a free sausage biscuit the other day, the lady running the register said it was her good deed for the day. And I've been hugged by two different random old ladies, (the first one freaked me out because I didn't know what she was going to do!) I have to admire you for holding back...I'm not sure I would be able to control my temper. |

6 months ago, I was in my cammies in Atlanta, coming home on combat leave, when this hippie punk called me a "murderer." I told them that I was a killer, sure, but that I'd never murder anyone. It kinda put a smile on my face. |

To the best of my knowledge, nothing like that has happened to my husband. Quite the opposite in fact. However, during his last deployment his truck was vandalized several times, costing thousands of dollars to repair. One of the incidents could have been quite catastrophic if it had not been seen. The lug-nuts on one of the front wheels had been loosend nd the hub cover replaced. Where I lived at the time was up on a mountain, wth a 1800 ft drop in only three miles of road...
And these are the people who claim they love 'peace.' |
