after he/she said something that was funny. I'm just asking because I was watching full metal jacket clips on youtube.com and I couldn't help but laugh (and yes I know it would not be very smart to do so)! All these people are so right. I believe it happens more than we care to realize. I believe that in the back of our minds, if it's not us that's getting our butts reamed, it's funny.
I've seen it done several times. And every single time it happened no more than 10 seconds later it wasn't funny anymore.
They're there to teach the recruit humility and discipline. Self discipline as well. Laugh, and you'll learn exactly what those words mean. The Hard Way!!! |

Yes, some people lose it out of nervous laughter. The result is a calamity for the individual, trust me.

Drill SGT's are HILARIOUS, but there is a time and place for everything, a recruit is in a sort of "serious" situation so it's easy enough not to laugh. The days of Full Metal Jacket are long gone, even in the Marines, but it's still a pretty good indicator for someone who has no idea what it's like. |

When I was an RDC (Navy equivilant of Drill Sergeant), it happened only once, in a Division, and it always happened. After that, they did not think it was that funny anymore, nor did the rest of the division who "assissted" him in making sure the floor wasn't going to suddenly jump up by pushing it down repeatadley, be able to count the abdominal muscles in their gut (by the throbbing), See how high in the air they could get when clapping their hands over and over and over, and afterwards, verifying that all of the belongings they owned where in the proper place, after recovering them from wherever they happened to be. |

Yes, in Navy boot camp I did but, like other posters above, paid the price along with my recruit mates. But it did relieve the tension.

Therre was one incident , in with a platoon sgt was dressing down his platoon., and we were all struggling not to laugh. However, OUR PSG started laughing , and so did we.
After he composed himself, we were all told "DROP AND GIVE ME 20!!!!!!!" |

Yeah I had a short case of the giggles when I heard beat your face for the first time. Needless to say after beating my face for a few hours I never laughed, giggle or smiled in basic again. |

My dad was drafted in 1954 right out of college, he was the oldest draftee in his training class. He said when the D.I. got in his face he had a very difficult time not laughing (he thought it was the funniest thing he had seen in his life), but he knew if he did, he would be in big trouble. But he said the fact that he thought the guy was so funny and he had to try to be serious made Basic and his entire time in the Army a breeze, he became a corporal the day he was eligible (once he was at his duty station of course, I think he was a PFC for literally 1 day). Had he laughed, he would have had a much more difficult time. He knew the guy was trying to scare him but couldn't really hurt him.
Oh and about 10 minutes later the D.I. wanted to know if anyone was a college graduate, he didn't respond, he said the poor guys who responded really caught it throughout basic. |
