Has anyone served in the armed forces with gang members?

I saw this documentary about gang members going into the armed forces to get military training. Does this really happen?

Like Kevin J I have not served with an active gang member, however I have known more then a few enlisted soldiers that were in a gang and they really aren't bad soldiers. I saw that same video you were talking about - Its possible that some are still gang bangin but most have actually moved on.

I've never served with a gang member, but there is a real possibility of anything with almost 1.7 million people serving, it only takes one person to show up on a news report. That gang member would have to have an absolutely spotless record, no juvenile charges, and absolutely no tattoos or marks identifying him into a gang to even think about serving. Recruiters are also required to ask upon any suspicions that the individual may be a part of a gang.

I think I saw the same thing you did. They found gang **** sprayed on walls in Iraq. That's ridiculous.

Never served with an active gang member, at least not to my knowledege. However, served with some former gang members who are now outstanding NCOs (never met an officer that was a former gang member, or willing to admit to it). Some required waivers to get in though. I'm sure there are active gang members in the military but I haven't come across any.

There may be a small number of gang bangers in the military but I'm thinking they would be foolish to leave and go back to their old ways since they'd make more money soldiering then they make being a punk.
