What a strange question! I was shot on 1 January 1980 in Wimbledon. I was a police officer and there had been a fracas at a New Year's Eve party which resulted in one of the guests getting a sawn-off shot gun and returning to shoot the host.
I got in the way.
He used a reloaded cartridge which had shrapnel in it instead of pellets. I was shot from about 10 yards away but because of the spread only one piece hit me, at an oblique angle. It entered just above my wrist and came out the same side about 3" higher.
It felt, at the time, like I had been hit on the arm with a metal bar. Later it burnt quite a bit and s few days later I got quite a bad infection from whatever the cartridge was loaded with.
Just to complete the story, the person who shot me got 4 years in prison and was out after about 20 months, having been on remand for four.
I, however, had to wait two years for my Criminal Injuries compensation - £140!! He earnt more than that in prison.
But I'm not bitter - not bl**dy much, even after 27 years.
Hope it helps, albeit I am sure you will have victims of much worse shootings answer this. However, I missed being killed by the width of my body. |

I was shot back in 2001 in a robbery(long story). The combination of astonishment and the force from the bullet pushed me to the ground. It burned really really bad. It's like taking a ciggarette or a hot charcoal and having it imbedded under your skin. And its really wet, because you bleed a lot. |

Twice, in Vietnam, and to be honest, I never noticed it until after the fights were over. |

You do feel being shot in the same way as say a knife cut. It is more like getting hit by hammer at supersonic speed. You go into shock and do feel much initially. Its when you come around (if you come round) after the event that it really hurts like hell perhaps it compares with being in a high speed catastrophic road accident with broken bones. |

I have been shot and un lucky enough to say more than once and with more than one different type of weapon. (including taking a round to body armor) I can describe my pain but the pain will be different for every one depending on size of round where the injury is etc. For me when I got hit with RPG shrapnel I did not notice it untill after the mission was over once I did I freaked and the pain set in it was mostly a very hot burning sensation in the area with a cold feeling all over. However when I got shot in the vest by a high powered rifle round it felt like getting hit by a truck it cracked through my SAPI plate and lodged in my muscle and skin about 1/8 of an inch. It bled a lot and it was a horrbile burning intense pain and with the PTSD I have now it still hurts during flashbacks etc as "phantom pain" Now when I took shot gun pellets to my legs it felt like some one had thrown boiling hot water all over my leg and it hurt all the way down to the bone. My battle buddies have said that some times theirs felt cold others felt hot intense pain it all depends. But like I said the first time I had such a large adrenialine rush I did not feel it at all. Hope this helps......Shadow Stalker |

The actual shot was point blank into my hand...it went numb and I did not fel pain right away...the smell of burnt flesh was the over riding thing I remember....I went to the hospital and a Doctor friend of mine was working that night...he loaded me up with pain killers just as I started to feel the pain....so I was high as a kite and felt no pain till rehab started some 4 weeks later...that was pain moving a hand with some small metal fragments still in and with stitched tendons....To this day I feel it in my hand with the change of weather... |

Depends where you got shot at, My Father was shot in the neck in Vietnam he said he left his body & seen the fire fight & a voice told him it wasnt his time yet he then came to on a helicopter with a medic yelling at him not to die & he said he was so thirsty he felt like he was going to choke to death he was paralyzed from the neck down for a year Doctors to this day do not know how he survived the round went between his spinal cord & jugular vein if the round had been off by a hair it would of hit one of them.As for pain he still has neck & headaches. |

shrapnel only...numbness followed by burning followed by aching followed by PAIN...severe pain..took about 5-6 seconds for it all to set in...I was on fire once also....that didnt hurt but for a second til the nerve endings burned away....that pain started when the regrowth started and the therapy went into overdrive |

Never shot but one time, i had a splintered stick impale my leg, it was about 4 inches wide and down to the bone and there was a big lump of flesh hanging off, i couldnt feel a thing, Except for a numbness and a feeling kinda like a bruise. It was wierd. |

i was shot by a a x mate ,he used a 9mm handgun, he wonted to fight me which i did not wont to do , but he was on his way and told me to go 2 the river side . i had no idea he was armed and i was thinking i could reason wit him , anyways he shot me out side of my house and my girlfriend witnessed it my bro and pall got arrested 4 it , 999 UK hung up on the call , then made us drive 3 miles to local police station , were after 40 min s after call in an ambulance , that was 100 meters way at its base did i get help , the bullet never hurt , not one bit , it went straight threw my tap , never neck , docs said i was a miracle . as it missed all arteries as it was on left side.
it was the least pain i ve felt , even though i said my good byes , the police would not help me and about 13 mates were there going mad as the cowards would not come out . peace / |
