Have you ever fired a weapon before boot camp?

In your day's prior to the Military, did you ever fire a weapon before?

I'm thinking about joining the Army or Marines, is it recommended that you have some fire arm knowledge?

Pat
In the case of the Marine Corps, at least, it's better not to have any or much experience. They spend plenty of time and resources training you exactly how to shoot a M16 in basic training.

I had never fired a weapon before Basic Training.
Many believe it is better that you haven't fired a weapon, as it allows you to not have old habits and allows you to learn fresh the proper way.

Ed J
It's better if you had none, that way there are no bad habits to break.

I had been shooting since I was about 10, but my father was a former Marine and Police officer so he made sure I was shooting properly. Reaching expert level marksmanship was a breeze for me.

The good thing about joining the service is that it is best to have no knowledge of practically anything, you are taught what you need to know.

So no you need not have used a weapon before entry

Better to start out with no knowledge of firearms like I did, you develope bad habits and they have to break them. with you you will be a clean slate.

yes but they do teach you to fire military weapons

I'm not even in yet and I've fired plenty of weapons.

If you go in with some basic knowledge, it will be easier for you. But they train you in everything you need to know so I don't think it would be a problem if you don't shoot before going in.

Libertarian!
I have only fired a bb gun before! :)
I'm going to AF (yes we learn the m16 inside & out and fire it)
I have no problem firing a weapon, and look forward to it because it is just one more thing I will have the opportunity to learn! :)
And the other posters talking about the previous developed habits make a good point!
