Help! 18 and 19 year old married couple with 2 children both wanting to join the air force?

before i get into details please we want honest answers please do not try to sell or recruit us we already want to join we just need to get things straight...

i am 19 years and my husband is 18 soon to be 19 we both graduated from high school. we have a 3 year old and a 1 month old. i took my asvab test and i got an 81 my husband still needs to take it. we would both like to join the air force. i am interested in nursing and my husband is interested in veterinarian or if that is not an option police. but we have a lot of questions that need answered so we know what and how to go about doing what we want but no recruiter will be honest they just want us to join here are the questions
*can we both join at the same time?
*will we have to give some one custody of our children?
*will we be able to have our children live with us once we get out of training and how long after we go in will it take to move them in with us?
*what is the process of joining when you have children?
*we both want to go to college how will that work while on active duty?
*what are some other job options with my asvab score?
*is veterinarian a job option, if not what is the closest related job?
*can someone explain how the ranking works, how to move up in rank?
*benefits and pay?

It is not going to be easy. Ideally, you would want one person to join, and the other to be available for the children.

a. The jobs you want (except nursing) are probably not going to be available due to the high recruiting numbers. I believe the Army will meet its yearly quota in June. The Air Force has even more people and fewer spots. When I spoke with a recruiter earlier this year, she said it was taking 5-6 months to ship out.
b. you will need to take a physical and will not be eligible to do that until you are 6 months post partum.
C. You CAN both join, you will just need a waiver for having kids, and will have to have somebody sign to agree to take care of the kids when you are both gone.
D.. They will try not to deploy you at the same time. One will deploy for 6 months, come back and then the other will deploy. There is no guarantee.
E. The air force will TRY to give you the same duty station, if that is not possible, they will try to give you the same region. They make no promises.
F. You will be able to have the kids live with you when you finish training. I believe initial training is 8 1/2 weeks, then you will have your job training which is any where from another couple of months to a year. After you get to your first duty station, the kids can come live with you. Since yall would be dual military, you will have preference when it comes to on base child care.
G. It is possible to both go to school, but it won't be easy. For example, your day will begin by 4:30 am and run until a minimum of 5pm for work (longer if your hubby is an MPolice). Then you will have to pick your kids up and feed them. Then get them ready for bed after only seeing them for a couple of hours. Then you would have to stay up to do online schooling or take a night class. You would have almost no time together. Then get up early and repeat. Mix in getting deployed once ever year or year and a half, and you see the difficulties.
H. Veternary is not an option but their is an animal related job. Not sure about the title, but it is almost impossible to get. MP is also crazy hard. You really need to ask your recruiter. They should have a list of jobs they are hiring for right now... it probably will only list a few.
I. Starting pay is something like 14,000 a year, but you have free medical care and free housing, and food for the active duty military person. For example, My hubby as an E-3 would make about 2,600 a month without medical care counted, but including housing allowance.
J. You start out as an E-1 (possibly E-2) and get rank with time until about an E-4, then you have to go on a board and do some book work to get promoted.

I am not trying to discourage yall, but give you an idea of reality. Hubby and I looked into it, but decided it wasn't worth it.

If yall were set on being dual military, maybe one could go reservist. You would still be making upto 900 a month extra ontop of the single salary. That person would just have to be gone one weekend a month. They would probably still be deployed, even during the first year, but deployments are not as frequent or as long, and it would help with schooling a bit.

Again, my advice with two little ones is to just have one of yall do military and let the other work on their degree. The other could enter as an officer after getting the degree.. They start at like 40,000 and have a better life style. Then the other parent could stay home and work on their degree, because their four year contract would be about up.

Good luck!

You will have a hard time enlisting with two children.

The Air force will have to do a financial eligibility determination and issue a wavier for either or both of you to enlist.

They will look at your debt load to determine that.

You have to have a college degree to be either a Nurse or a Veterinarian.

So that rules both those jobs out.

(K-9 Handler Air Force..)
For your type of job ( Husband too) you both will have to have a college degree. Also the military stays away from 18 year olds who have children. ( Who will take care of the little ones) They will consider you but please remember the first three years in the military you will be gone over seas most of the time. If you do get state side you will work 60 to 70 hours a week. The veterinarian field is now done by civilians with college degrees. I would say if you get into the military school is not an option. ( remember you work 60 to 70 hours a week) All you do is Eat, sleep and work.

Put your kids up for adoption! then you both can join!
use birth control, IUD, cervical cap & condoms!

I HIGHLY discourage you from both enlisting... while I understand your desire for a stable job/income/etc, it is extremely difficult to have a mil-to-mil marriage, with children, especially early in your career and especially while trying to go to school at the same time - that combination is probably impossible, or nearly so. If one of you joins the military, the whole family will be provided for (on base childcare, medical/dental, commissary, etc) while still providing a (more) stable home for your children. Some fact/answers:

- Nurses need to have a bachelor's degree.
- If you do decide to enlist at the same time (or are ever both in the armed forces), you will need a "family care plan" for who will have custody of your children if you are both deployed or away from home. If you can't make a family care plan (at any point), the military CAN force one of you out.
- Once you finish your basic/advanced training, your children would be able to live with you.
- You ca

Wow, I am completely blown away by your guys selfishness.
Hey you said you wanted honesty...so sit & take it!
The military is NOT a regular 9 to 5 job.

Yes you both will have to sign over custody. Who knows how long you will be in training & school & what your first duty station will be. Maybe after training you are deployed to Iraq & your hubby goes to Hawaii.

No you cannot go to college and be in the military at the same time w/ kids...who the____ will take care of the kids? He's on deployment & mom needs to study for finals??? One of you two is going to have to give up the dream of active duty military! It's call sacrifice. It is hard enough for a married couple to handle the marriage & military w/o kids...you have no idea what you are asking for.

Let me offer you somethings to think about. Why don't you join first after you get settled after boot camp, after school & after you get to a duty station, then your husband joins. That is still a very bad idea...but it might work.
You guys can go to college after you get out of the military.
And for an enlisted no a VET is not a job option.

At this point I feel really bad for your kids, your obligation is to take care of them not run out and live your own life & drag them along for the ride.
Maybe you should start practicing BC so that you can have some freedom a little later in life.

Anyway I have a lot more to say...but I think I have said enough.

I don't advise both of you to join the military at the same time. My son's father and I had a child AFTER we were both E-5's (good pay), stationed in the same general area and it was still hard. A good idea would be for one of you to join, the other to go to college. The Navy now offers tuition assistance for spouses!! They have daycare so that you can attend school full-time. With two children, I can pretty much guarantee that you will not have time to balance school, the military and family. I tried this, it took me 4 years to get an Associates degree because I never had time to attend classes.
And for the people who are sticking in the rude comments about being 15 with a child... I HAD MY FIRST CHILD AT 15, NEVER ASKED FOR OR RECEIVED A DIME FROM WELFARE. We should be encouraging this young couple and helping... **** most people in their position seem like they don't care these days!

Mrsjvb
both of you cannot enlist as there are children involved. Only one could go AD and the other MIGHT be allowed to go Reserves. spousal col location is never guaranteed so there is NO way of being able to promise you will be together.. giving up custody just to enlist is a Disqulafier and trying to regain custody during the first term of enlistment would only get you two kicked out for fraudulent enlistment.

as for your career fields:

Nursing is an OFFICER position and you must have the BSN IN HAND before you can seek a commission.

Veterinarian: only the ARMY has Vets. again it is an Officer position and you must have the DVM in hand . there is an enlisted Vet Tech field that requires no college.

on average it takes about twice as long to get a degree while serving AD. NEITHER of you could get your preferred degrees while serving as they each require lab work and clinical work in a real world setting. military duties will ALWAYS take precedence.

a good army wife
If I were you I would let my husband join. That will cut down on the confusion. As a mother I could never let ANYONE but myself take care of my children. Talk to a recruiter.

yes abandon the children you didnt even plan for

Leaving 4 bmt...1 week
*can we both join at the same time?
..yes..
*will we have to give some one custody of our children?
..yes..
*will we be able to have our children live with us once we get out of training and how long after we go in will it take to move them in with us?
..you will be able to have your children live with you after you have completed basic&tech school..
*what is the process of joining when you have children?
..you will need to get a waiver & score high on the asvab..
*we both want to go to college how will that work while on active duty?
..you would just have to find a schedule that fits you, as far as school and children. you dont have a choice about when you work..
*what are some other job options with my asvab score?
..im not sure. bt if you go to a recruiter office they could tell you..
*is veterinarian a job option, if not what is the closest related job?
..once again. ask a recruiter..
*can someone explain how the ranking works, how to move up in rank?
..you are eligible to move up rank after a certain amout of time, bt mostly EDUCATION!!..
*benefits and pay?
..depends on job and rank. you will however recieve BAH benefits..

i really hope i helped. and to all of you who are judging them.you dont have a heaven or hell to put them in so leaving the judging to GOD..who in fact doesnt even judge!...

Hi here are questions from a Navy standpoint

Yes you can both join at the same time.

You will have to give someone joint custody. Howver you BOTH will get $250/mo for fam we pay.

Once you're in school depending on what rate you choose will determine how long your school is

My wife and I are both in the service also and college is an option. You do need command approval. They will want you to learn your job and get qualified but you can do it. You can get $4500 per year for tuition assistance.

One of you will likelybe at sea and the other at shore. You will have to submit a family care plan in case you both deploy.

For the pay and benefits dual-BAH and it's nice. For now you'd get BaH, base pay, and fam sep. Good luck and let me know if you want more info
